'Kraken' billing platform is used by Octopus, E.ON Next and EDF.

E.ON Next require fixed direct debits and smart meters on their fixed tariff contracts (amount can be increased by any amount and decreased by up to 10% online). The date is fixed.

EDF allow either fixed or whole bill (variable) direct debits on their standard variable tariff. Smart meters are encouraged and receive messages passed through to the IHD.

Fundamentally you have failed to understand direct debits and the two ways this can be paid offered by your supplier.

There has been a lot of talk on this over the board for a good couple of years but maybe you don't read the board often?

  • Not sure if I'm just being extra dense but I can't see anything that would imply you can't have a smart meter because of them using Kraken?!  It's very much designed to work with them, and is how Octopus can offer the Agile tariff.
All supplier billing systems can be made to work with smart meters. Suppliers use DCC-accredited secure software (known as an Adapter) to communicate with a smart meter. These can be ‘built’ by the supplier or provided by a third-party Adapter service such as TMA. All suppliers could also bill using 30 minute data should they choose to do so. Undoubtedly, Kraken is the market leader but I have no doubt other suppliers are updating their billing systems.

with Octopus its also not a fixed date each month, its paid when a bill is issued, and my bills dont get issued the same date every month.
This bit is annoying, I've been grumping about this with them and they just keep saying "that's how it works". Yeah, so submit a suggestion to the dev team, that's what suggestions are for.

I absolutely WANT a Variable (amount) DD, however I'd prefer the payment date to be fixed. Can't see why they can't just have any bill amount "roll forward" to be taken on the next fixed payment date.
I move all my money around once a month and now juggling taking readings on different dates to try and get their DD to be taken out between when I get paid and when I move my money. Irritatingly their smart metre comes around and ends up taking it's own set of readings to so I end up with multiple bills and payments a month. Annoying!

Much easier when I just took manual readings, sent them, and they then billed me on a set date.
Much prefer only paying for what I use though.

I have been with Octopus for 5 years+ and my smart meter bill is up to the 27th and is is released on the 29th. If data is missing, then no bill is raised which is easily fixed with an email. My billing then reverts back to the 27th.

I knew all suppliers' systems worked with them but didn't twig that they could all bill using 30min data - though thinking about it, that seems very obvious since they pull the XML file and not just readings (which I have also learned from your excellent explanations on the board, thank you ).

Thank you but that is not quite what I said. All suppliers receive 30 minute usage data which COULD be used by them for billing as opposed to meter index readings. Whether this makes business sense for a supplier that does not yet offer tariffs like Octopus Agile and Intelligent is a different issue. They may not want the customer services hassle when automatic billing fails because of a corrupt or missing 30 minute data segment.

Because of Agile and Intelligent, Octopus chooses to bill all its other time-of-use tariffs on 30 minute usage data. For tariffs such as GO; Cosy and Flux, these could be billed accurately using 2/3 of the 4 smart meter registers. Indeed, when Go first came out some years ago it was a 2 register tariff.

My guess is that other suppliers will rollout traditional time-of-use tariffs based on peak; mid peak and off peak time periods using 3 registers. We can then look forward to pages and pages on this forum asking for advice on how to manually read 3 registers on a smart meter! As Octopus found out some years ago, one of the challenges associated with using 30 minute data is knowing when data is missing, and having some sort of automatic system working in the background to attempt to recover what is missing.

When I got my SMETS2 meters 4 years ago, a monthly statement was not a given. Fortunately, things are now more assured in that respect than there were.
