Kraken is the billing platform built by Octopus   Eon license it from them, and from what I gather the branding change to Eon Next happened when they moved to using Kraken.

@ the OP,

Variable Direct Debit is certainly an option with Eon Next and has been one I have used for a year now.  Account is zeroised some 16 days or so after statement raised.  My bill for April was raised on the 1st April, £177.08 less a couple of quid from DFS payment leading to a DD taken of £175.76 to be taken in 2 days time.

You need to ring Eon Next by phone (at least I did) and specify what is needed (payment by Variable Direct Debit) if this is how you want to pay.  You don't need to have a smart meter to do it.  I do not get into a lather with the level of DD payments as a result.

Not sure if I'm just being extra dense but I can't see anything that would imply you can't have a smart meter because of them using Kraken?!  It's very much designed to work with them, and is how Octopus can offer the Agile tariff.

I recently switched to variable DD with Octopus, if you ok with it changing from month to month, it at least gives you an assurance you wont pay more than the energy you use, but of course it goes the other way as well, you wont pay too little either.

I dont know how it works on Eon, but with Octopus its also not a fixed date each month, its paid when a bill is issued, and my bills dont get issued the same date every month.
