Why do Octopus insist on customers having a battery or EV for some of their tariffs?

    One such reason?

To encourage uptake of said items.
But have they been incentivized or pressurized to do that. And how does making the tariffs available to others discourage the uptake.
It encourages the uptake because you can only get those tariffs by `investing' in the stuff you are encouraged to buy.

Without the stuff, you can't have the tariff.

    Pretty simple really?
The incentive for getting the stuff is to make good use of these tariff.  I think it's doubtful that many people that have decided to get an EV would change their minds if they found  they could get the tariff without one.
The incentive for getting the stuff is that you stop burning other stuff!

The electricity tariffs make it easier.

Without the stuff, you pay more.

It may make the decision to get an ev or a heat pump easier if you know it opens up more affordable energy tariffs.

    When are you getting yours?

I've never heard of anyone being refused or forced off the tariff for not having an EV or not using enough power - mostly you just tick the box that says "I have an EV" and they don't question it.

I think that in past times, on Octopus Go the day rate was the same as the flexible rate, so you were guaranteed to save money on that tariff even without an EV.  These days, the day rate is higher, so the tariff might not make sense if you cannot make use of the off peak price at least a little bit.

As for Agile which is the subject of this thread I guess, I don't think you need to have an EV or anything else to go on Agile - it just says that it's only recommended for people with batteries or EV.

    Good news for the environment.

I doubt that designing, building, delivering and supporting evs is that easy?

That's not the point, point is that their main focus is to make money now.

If you want 100% green energy there's 100green company which does it best in UK and it's TOU tarrif Tide offers 3 periods per day with 0-7am at 9p/kWh.

It was over 2 years ago, but I was told at renewal I'd need to provide evidence I had an EV to renew on Go. I didn't attempt to renew as I was coming off Go Faster with the customisable off-peak times, and vanilla Go didn't suit me, so I cannot confirm whether or not they follow through. But yes, Agile has always been open to all (with a smart meter).

Agree, in the past they were burning their investors' capital growing their market share, in part through loss-leading pricing. They no longer need to do that. They now have a responsibility to those shareholders to make a return on that capital.
Some of us have been lucky enough to ride the wave and save a lot of money in those early years. This ride is now over.

    Well, not really.

They install heat pumps and ev chargers at a loss.

They supply me with all my electricity at 7p per kWh and buy it back at 15p per kWh.

I think they do a great job of giving their customers the opportunity to help the environment without crippling them with huge electricity bills.
