Why would people want to pay more for their energy than they need to do?
    Many reasons are given.

    To avoid being spied on.
The IHD stops working or doesn't show the correct cost
Smart meters are nothing but trouble, all you here is complaints about problems
I am capable of reading my own meters
Not wanting their power cut or limited against their will
My personal favorite - if it aint broke don't fixt it!

The list goes on and on!
I totally agree but I also agree smart meters are the future and I doubt they can be stopped

When ICE stops being produced and sold, when we become a nation of only electric vehicles

When almost everyone who work, which is the vast majority can only charge in the evening or overnight

What's to stop the energy companies from increasing the rates for that period

Like I have said many times smart meters give energy companies complete control of what you pay, even a low user like myself will have to pay more as my data will show when I use energy and how much.

Time of use tariffs will be able to be set to an individual account rather than universal, there will be no such thing as person A using 10kwh making the company less income than person B using 20kwh, rates can be adjusted to equals the profit out.

Energy companies will have the means to take your money no matter what you do to try to cut down, the only way out of this I guess is back to living as we did in the 50s.

That's my opinion anyway for what it's worth so I will be sticking to a dumb meter as I will be sticking to an ICE car for as long as I am able

A smart bulb uses about 4 Watts per hour in standby waiting to be activated, around 35 kWh per year in standby if it's never activated. When the Smart bulb is turned on it can use from 10 Watts upwards per hour, that's about one fifth of an old style bulb.
I got the info from the smart bulbs I had a few years ago when it said a old style bulb used about 1kWh in 25 hours whereas the smart bulbs I had used 200W in the same period.
Anything that's claimed to be smart will use some electricity however small when it's not in operation.
Someone please tell me what money is

Those on dumb meters will end up paying more than anyone on a smart meter, i.e. peak rates 24/7 with no opportunity to shift usage to less expensive times.

    I didn't say they wouldn't

I'm saying the energy companies have more control over your bill with a smart meter

But by that logic those on a dumb meter will have even less control, surely?

You still have it the wrong way around.

They will charge people without smart meters the highest rate all day every day.

Those not on smart meters will pay the most possible irrespective of when they use it.
Where does all this nonsense come from?

How can a ‘smart meter give energy companies complete control of what you pay’? A smart meter is just a meter that provides the supplier with readings. The contract - the tariff - is agreed between the customer and the supplier irrespective of the meter type. Suppliers cannot just raise evening rates unless the contract that the customer ‘signed’ allows them to do so.

My daughter is on Octopus Agile. She knows that her unit rates will change every 30 minutes. She has no contract tie in and can change to another tariff now knowing that the change will happen at midnight. Why does she stay on Agile: simple, her overall electricity cost is lower than the Ofgem-capped tariff.

    Very much so,

I did also state smart meters are the future and eventually we will all be on them, thus giving energy companies complete control over every individual whatever ducking and diving you do to get get your usage down.

By allowing those with smart meters to use electricity when the rates are the cheapest they will be able to pay less, those without smart meters won't be able to benefit, therefore those without smart meters will pay the highest rates. I never said rates will be raised, they just won't be able to be lowered.
