We already had one in the house when we moved in so had no choice. For us it's always worked out dearer compared to family who live nearby who just paid rates but having said that they all have meters fitted now which is saving them money.  Its always been higher as DH spends ages in the shower but I'm hoping this raise is a blip not something scary. Maybe the digital reading was a bit out last time and this is just playing catch up. I'll know in a month. No obvious signs of a leak but when the house is empty I'll do a check on the meter a few hours apart to see what it says.

Good luck with the back to school.  Ours is tomorrow/Thursday.

Building work has started. It's the moment of truth. The house hasn't fallen down yet and they are standing under where the hole in the front of the house is to work so they must know it's okay. It's got props and scaffolding so will be perfectly fine.-realistically my nerves about all this are all cos I'm not an experienced builder. Within the week we will be sorted and can pay final monies and re work the budget. Then to save for plastering!

My weekly budget for shopping and petrol has been swapped to my chase account. I'm back to using that for cash back but if the building work over spends I'll go back to c card just in case. The food spend is slightly higher than normal as we bought boxes of beer for any work being done with mates rates but I'm still within budget. The petrol tank has been topped up and should have enough for a good couple of weeks.

Hope the building work goes smoothly, and hopefully it will make a big difference to your comfort!

Thanks jwil. House is still standing. They will finish up at some point this week. The weather won the battle yesterday with fairly strong wind and rain near us. The new windows are in but are not fully trimmed up till the scaffolding comes down. I know the final amount and we have enough. Next stop is plastering, I've been in touch with him and he will come and quote for us soon with a view to doing the work next month. No idea on the price for that but I'm hoping it's cheaper than the guesstimate going round in my head. He's done work for us before so fingers crossed

Well the scaffolding is down and work is finished and paid for. We now have no more crack in the brickwork and two lovely bay windows that we can properly see through. ( for the first time since we moved here -the panes had blown so they had always been misted over ). Now to go and count up what's left to start the plastering fund!
