Looks like accounts became eligible for the Alternative Fuel Payments from yesterday. Haven't heard of anyone receiving it as yet though so not sure if this is actually implemented by any of the energy companies, or just a quiet press release from the government so any further delays won't be on their heads.

The line about requiring bank statements for those that need to apply concerns me a little as there will no doubt be those that successfully exploit it. So though I'm am glad to see them give the warning here, I do hope it is stressed a little more firmly during the actual application process so that it's not possible to gloss over the sentence.

Not bank statements, bank details - presumably for where to send the payment if the application is successful.

I'd thought the 6th was when they gave suppliers the details of who qualified automatically.  (Could be wrong, of course!)

You can find out if your specific postcode is counted as having mains gas or not

That URL has a slight typo...

    It should be: https://www.xoserve.com/media/fadn4tnc/off-gas-live-postcodes-2022.xlsx?term=Off-gas
Thank you, it worked fine clicking the link in the PDF but it *really* did not want to be copied!

Ahh, I'm so used to having to hand over statements over the last couple of years that's where my mind automatically went. That makes much more sense though spoonie.

Yes, I think the language in it is a bit naughty. As you say, I think they have only just passed the postcode data over to them so making it sound like payments should have already started is, at best, misleading.

I manage my mums Eon next account and noticed her £200 went in on 12th. She didn't have to do anything but lives on the islands where everyone outside the main town is on alternative fuel.

I've deleted my original comment as it was incorrect, and the BG AFP method is dependent on how you pay your bills. See later posts/threads for info.

It gets credited to your electricity account, not your bank account.

Has British Gas told you they've transferred it on to your bank account?

They're not paying it into bank accounts. There's a page on their website which explains how it is to be paid, depending on your usual payment method. If you currently pay by direct debit the £200 is to be applied as a credit to your electricity account this month.

I'm waiting on mine from BG, well waiting to find out if I get it too. I'm wondering as I pay by DD whether I can get the credit (if they give it to me) transferred into my bank account, so I can buy oil!
  • From the MSE Twitter thread it seems only Eon have paid it yet.

Just had this mail from Scottish Power:

Your Alternative Fuel Payment has been paid

    Hello XXX,

You've been identified by HM Government as being eligible for the Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP). The payment is part of their cost of living assistance measures, delivered to eligible customers through electricity suppliers and is aimed at helping customers who use alternative fuels such as biomass or heating oil with their energy costs this winter.

We're pleased to confirm that we've sent your one-off Alternative Fuel Payment of £200.00 as a refund to your bank today. Please allow a few working days for this credit to be shown in your bank account.

You can find out more about the scheme, as well as additional support, here.

Thanks for being a ScottishPower customer.

The Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) is funded by HM Government. Please note we're legally required to provide personal data about your AFP to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Find out more about how BEIS use that personal data here.
