The article got the dates wrong, it was actually in 1996 that the price went to minus 2p.

Ironically, Sanders Supermarket was eventually closed when the owner sold his main business (a garden centre) to Tesco.  They weren't able to get planning permission for a supermarket so it was ultimately sold on and is still a garden centre (now a Blue Diamond).
Thanks, I vaguely remembered it from my childhood, it was difficult to find a written piece documenting it - cracked aren't really top tier journalism! (Though now I'm searching for minus 2p, not a penny like I thought originally, there's an Irish Times piece from 1996)
  • I see there's a seller on ebay.... selling one can of heinz beans for £555 and others at £55 a can...... obviously the £55 cans  are a bargain

I'm trying to wean my husband off baked beans, as they aren't low carb. He won't eat anything but Heinz. Just done an Iceland order and they have offers atm.
I have moved from haricot to soy beans for home cooked baked beans. When cooked in a tomato barbecue sauce they are virtually identical. The soy beans have approx 3x the protein and 1/3rd the carbs of haricot.

Ebay - people/sellers do that to catch tabloid headlines that fall for it, potential EG's for tabloid headline

Can of baked beans sell at 55 pounds on Ebay

Paper bag on Ebay for 80 pounds

Toilet roll on Ebay on sale for 69 pound and so on

I guess some fall for it and buy it,

    Thanks

fyi - M&S beans seemed a bargain at 85p and were much nicer than the Tesco ones that were just slightly cheaper. Think Tesco sells a nicer discount brand - Branson or something like that.  I know them when I see them.

Trying to remember the last time I bought Heinz.....would only have been if they were on extra special.

I have nothing to add on the price of baked beans, but I did notice the price of them had shot up a few weeks ago when I was looking at buying chopped chipped tomatoes, which have also shot up around 50% (all brands I've seen). Fortunately I rarely buy them so 4 tins will last me a year.or more.
But when I do have them I like them mixed in with brown sauce (HP).

(OT - the food costs are now as worrying - Tesco online we shop for most of groceries and tin of Heinz beans close to 180p)
    1 tin £1.20 or pack of 4 for £3.99
LIDL NI 6 pack of HEINZ 3.99

My favourite hasn't been mentioned . Newgate baked beans are Lidl own brand  . Less than £1-50 for a pack of 4 tins . They taste good . I am not too worried about salt or sugar content . A slice of toast is converted into sugar by the body anyhow !
Toasting bread lowers the carb content.
