    Hi,

I hope you don't buy Tesco brand beans. They contain 69% beans and tomatoes, topped up with sugar and water.
On the other hand Cross and Blackwell are 89% beans and tomatoes, so less sugar is required.
I would say that makes Cross and Blackwell cheaper and healthier.
Whilst not wishing to get into a beans argument, and sorry to hijack the shower thread :) I had a look through the ingredients of each brands to compare, as its knowledge worth knowing to me personally
You do have a something of point with Tesco, not because of beans % so much, but because they substitute tomato with Maltodextrin bulking agent and have more water, so you get less tomato, as does Morrisons
Assume you mean Branston Beans (black can yellow logo) as Crosse and Blackwell aren't listed as making beans on any supermarket.
From the results I would not agree they are healthier or cheaper, as you get less salt and sugar in most of the other brands, and bean % is more or less the same, you do get a tiny dash more tomato pure though. That said Aldi beans have the highest sugar content of all beans out there.
    Branston - Beans 51%, Tomatoes 38%, Salt 1.24g, Sugar 9.6g - £1 a can
    Aldi - Beans 51%, Tomatoes 34% - Salt 1.3g, Sugar 13g - £0.39p a can
    Sainsbury NAS - Beans 51%, Tomatoes 33% - Salt 0.6g, Sugar 4.9g - £0.37p a can

    Asda NAS - Beans 50%, Tomatoes 37%,Salt 0.7g, Sugar 3.1g - £0.45p a can
    Heinz - Beans 50%, Tomatoes 36% - Salt 1.3g, Sugar 8.9g - £1.20 a can
    Heinz NAS - Beans 50%, Tomatoes 37% - Salt 0.9g, Sugar 3.9g - £1.20 a can

    Sainsbury - Beans 50%, Tomatoes 33% - Salt 1.05, Sugar 8.5g - £0.37p a can
    Asda - Beans 49%, Tomato 36%, Salt 0.96g, Sugar 8.6g - £0.50p a can

    Morrisons - Beans 49%, Tomato 28%, Salt 1.07g, Sugar 8.3g - £0.49p a can
    Tesco - Beans 49%, Tomatoes 20% - Salt 1.10g, Sugar 9.8g - £0.50p a can
    Tesco NAS - Beans 49%, Tomatoes 20% - Salt 0.78g, Sugar 6.5g - £0.50p a can
NAS = Reduced Sugar and Salt
Personally I buy Sainsbury beans and find them very tasty, and I'll probably look to get the NAS version now, but Asda look decent too

a good squirt of tomato puree helps thicken the juice, and drop curry or chilli powder helps spice them up.
Crosse & Blackwell beans have the least amount of beans, 44%, the same as the supermarket budget brands.
    C&B - Beans (44%), Water, Tomatoes (25%)
Asda Essentials - Haricot Beans (45%), Tomatoes (32%)
Tesco Stockwell - Haricot Beans (44%), Tomato Purée (27%)

Surely price per bean would be better.
  • I shopped in Morrisons last week and found it more expensive than Tesco. Paid £4.49 for 6 tins which I think is the most I've ever paid.

I don't like the supermarket brands I've tried, I refuse to buy Heinz as they don't stack!

I'm happy with Branstons, they were always on offer in Tesco but that seems to have stopped now, also now Tesco have removed a lot of the plastic packaging the "bulk" buying has pretty much gone

    Hi
My mistake - I misread in my haste shopping online  curried beans  were at 180p. However, the  other two Heinz beans we have EG, less sugar and standard beans from Heinz at 120p each or 3-99 for a 4 pack

The Heinz Beans curried at 180p
Standard Heinz beans land less sugar are 120p per standard sized tin

    Thanks

I always thought people ate baked beans because they are a cheap and filling foodstuff. They are no longer cheap - does that mean that people are buying them because they actually like them?!

Some shoppers don't look at per anything.

Heinz beans in Tesco are more expensive in the 6 pack as opposed to the 4 pack

Flora light is cheaper per in the small tub than the large tub

    Not in Tesco it isn't.  1 Kg £3.50, 450g £2.15 so £4.77 / Kg.

They are easy, beans on toast!
Although this is a money saving forum, I don't buy food based on price. I like good value, so when I see Branston at less than £3 x4 I will stock up.
I prefer not to buy beans with artificial sweeteners, so I decided on Branston a few years ago.

I like baked beans either on a jacket potato or toast, not as a side to a quick meal though. But I like other tinned beans too, kidney beans, butter beans etc

One of my Sons doesn't like them (but eats other tinned beans) but loves tinned spaghetti which I can't stand, pretty sure I did as a child though??
