The stand up wee is why I hate shared toilets.  I was in a restaurant on Sunday, early lunch, and only the 4th toilet was acceptable - because men.
Can't say I've been in too many women's toilets but the Mrs complains that many of them are rank even without the aid of men
As a semi-regular user of men’s toilets when the queues for the women’s are just too long, give me a rank woman’s toilet over a rank men’s one any day.
Although you are correct, both can be minging.
Agree.  When a women's toilet is nasty it's usually because of the general levels of upkeep by the venue, or everyone's drunk and there's an awful lot of people.
Women can be just as nasty as men. Where I used to work we had cases of women (or maybe/hopefully one woman) pooing on the actual toilet seat and leaving it there. This was a professional office as well. They actually had to send out a staff email about it. As far as I can remember this never occurred in the mens, although you obviously had the obligatory wee everywhere.

Those "flushable" wipes do not break down like toilet paper does, and they can still clog up the drains. Water companies hate the things, whist plumbers (and the likes) see them as a steady little earner due to the blockages they cause.
Fair enough. I’ve been using them for years and never had a problem with the drains so I’ll continue to do so. Should they start causing an issue I will of course reconsider.

If you've ever done a litter pick by a river, the flipping 'flushable' wipes are e
Out of interest how do you know they're the flushable wipes and not make up wipes? Admittedly I'm far from an expert in make up wipes but they look fairly similar to me and I expect after making it all the way to a river the remaining deposits would look similar too. I expect I'm missing something.

They could well be. I don't use either so haven't examined them in any great degree. They aren't welcome down toilets either. Pee, poo and paper is all that should be flushed.

What happens when somebody comes home from a heavy night and has to speak to god on the big white phone?  Do they get a faceful of whatever is intended to clean your nether regions?  Does the lid come down to finish them off?

It has a remote control.  The little arm doesn't come out and won't spray/squirt/oscillate/dry without being asked.

Your description makes it sound like an 80's school bully 🤭

Some have an automatic lid that lifts when you walk in. Wife thinks it's cool but I can't see the point of it - how can it tell if you want the lid and seat raising, or just the lid? ;)
I think you're missing the point of the toilet, which is provide you with a luxurious sit-down-wee experience as well.  The Japanese are meticulously clean, hence these loos.

Otherwise, what's the point of having the loo seat heated 247 for the maybe one time you happen to be at the right toilet a day.

Wife spends long enough in the bathroom as it is. Give her an all-singing, all-dancing toilet and she'll be gone for days at a time!  :)
Still waiting to talk to an actual owner of one, but by all accounts they love them.
Heated seat would have to be 24/7 in the winter at least. We're at that age where you wake up in the middle of the night, needing to "go"!
I've fitted several into projects and our friend runs a chain of restaurants where they always feature, so I've experienced them more than most over the last 8 years or so.

There's no doubt that they're fabulous.  Clearly I don't earn enough for them to feature as a must-have in my life, but I think they're like any modern appliance - once you have one it's very hard to go back to not having one.  It doesn't really make sense that we only wipe with paper.
If it's the water function that appeals it's likely far easier and cheaper to just get one of those handheld mini shower heads installed instead. It obviously won't dry though. We did consider a Japanese toilet but frankly I'd see it as a bit of a novelty and I wasn't willing to pay £1500+ for it. I instead spent a lot less for a normal toilet from a leading brand.

Personally I use those flushable wet wipes for number twos. They're damp with a soap of some sort built in and it leaves you feeling a lot cleaner than just normal paper. Without meaning to be too graphic here there are times when normal paper is completely clean after wiping and these wet wipes will still get an awful lot more mess off, mess that would ordinarily still be there. I struggle without them now, to the point that if I go away somewhere I take a pack with me. You can't take your Japanese toilet with you!
No wipes are ever flushable, it's a marketing gimick, please don't flush them down, have a bin next to the toilet to collect them, that's what I do and I use baby wipes, much cheaper than special toiler wipes. Also even the wipes don't clean as well as water. My dream is to have a Japanese toilet.

Saw your comment posted later on about it not causing problems for you, so you'll continue to use them. Well how nice. They do cause problems for sewage treatment companies though and the environment as was mentioned already. Use the bin.

I saw an advert for a product this week that you squirt onto regular toilet roll.  It then behaves like a wet wipe, but isn't one.   I thought that was quite a good idea but I can't remember where or when I saw it.
Surely any make up product advertised as a cleaner would suffice.

  • I believe Some of these loos have associated apps so you can start warming the seat while you’re finishing your tea, for example.

They do, but you're not going to wake up at 3am and use it to warm the toilet seat up because you'll need to go in 5 minutes.  :)

We had one installed in our new house. Not sure how much it costs to run but doesn’t seem much, it’s lovely when it’s cold to sit on a warm seat .Ours has a remote that lets you switch between male and female. Only negative is the fan doesn’t really dry you properly in my opinion.
The seat lifts up automatically when you enter the bathroom. I have on occasion found myself in the other bathroom staring at the normal toilet wondering why the seat isn’t lifting up. Ours can be controlled by an app but I’ve not got that far yet.
