Thanks @savingholmes and @foxgloves. Not too bad; just fiendishly busy and in
limbo, an odd combo! Am trying to offload part of a voluntary role I've taken on while not getting too irritated by reactionary types who think everything should be done the way it always has been. I'm having to spell out that this is a part time voluntary role and I am compressing a full time day job into 3 days per week to create time for many things not just this! Anyway enough of the crabbing; off to walk the beloved dog with beloved husband. Always a tonic. Love Humdinger xx9 -

Morning everyone! So, an update.
Money: feeling sensitive right now. A mix of good, bad and ugly. A bigger-than-usual invoice is due to be paid at the end of this month. That will enable me to build the business cushion by a month and repay some personal savings (this is probably a two-month process). Feb and March are also the blessed council-tax free months, that will also help build savings. DD has a job for 20 hours per week so will be repaying me £480 she owes me, hopefully in 2 lump sums.
On the subject of DD, she has an appointment with audiology next month for a hearing aid. She can stay up for a night to see friends; all good stuff. Her father and I have sent her £250 each to pay the deposit on her new house in September; this has now been done. I also sent her £200 earlier this month so she had a float. I'm so relieved about her health that frankly the money is secondary but that combined £450 is unexpected. That's what emergency funds are for though and I still have over £5,500 in there so as long as I build it back up, all is good. The next couple of months should see bigger than usual invoices. One of the great skills I see over and over again on these boards is patience: both in paying off debt and building up savings. Well now I have to use that skill on the latter. I may also need to find £850 in April to pay half of next term's rent as DD will not have a student loan next term and we don't want her to be taken to court for the rent.
All secondary to health though: thank goodness for the news we have had. No mass on her brain; some hearing loss on one side which may right itself; hearing aid available. Love Humdinger xx12 -
In other news, I've just been informed that a £3,000 legacy from a friend can be paid! I'm so grateful to her. She was 40 years older than me and actually died in front of me and DH in a restaurant. Glad for her that it was quick, painless and in the company of loved ones though it was traumatic for us. The timing of this legacy is good...I hope this doesn't sound heartless. I'm sending her thanks and appreciation for all that she was in life. Love Humdinger xx9

What a traumatic thing to happen. Although great for her that it was quick painless and she was loved.
It doesn't sound heartless, she left you the legacy for a good reason and if the timing is good and helps you out I am sure she would be delighted.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!3 -
I agree, your friend would be very happy that the legacy is helping you out. What a nice thought.
Glad nothing sinister with DD."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee4 -
Such good news about your DD and that there is a resolution for her going forward.
What a shock that must've been for you and DH re your friend. She'd be pleased to know the legacy is helping you out.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)5
