@thriftmonster - Yes, it's primarily being in a flood zone as climate change brings more unpredictable & extreme weather which is in my mind. The other key disruptor I can possibly see happening is temporary infrastructure/supply problems as a result of hacking. I always keep a well-stocked pantry anyway & have read that European countries tend to be stronger on household resilience. The world doesn't feel as stable as it did so without any panic, it just makes sense to me to be more prepared for emergencies.....but the top one around here is flooding.
2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!3 -
@2Scratters - Our rhubarb had another burst of growth once the weather cooled & we finally had some rain. I don't blame you for making the most of it when it's still good.
Btw, I only bottle tomatoes and blackberry & pear compote but I find a small folded towel at the bottom of the pan under the jars works well & I also tuck a rolled tea towel in between them to stop them clattering around while they're water-bathing.

Hello Monday Savers,
Usual 'getting set up for the week' day here today.
*Did 3 loads of laundry. Showery here so they are on the heated airer with added ooomph from the dehumidifier.
*Baked bread.
*Prepped & blanched last of our beans for the freezer.
*Made tomorrow's packed lunch & breakfast.
*Made mincemeat - it's steeping in sherry until Wednesday when I shall get it into jars.
*A neighbour brought me a big pile of magazines & some posh cat food her cat won't eat, which was lovely of her.
*Did a bit of present knitting.
*Did a few budget updates.
*Started working on some trial figures for best use of my AVC money. I only paid into AVCs for a very short time, but it's still a useful amount (as it was back in the 1990s so it has grown) & it will rebuild our Emergency Fund back to where it was pre-new roof (priority), start off a new Car Fund & make a number of useful Savings Pots top-ups as well as a few other things. Intend to double check the maths & have a discussion with Mr F about it in case a fresh pair of eyes reveals anything I've missed or could undergo a meaningful tweaking.
Very low effort nosebag tonight - pasta with a pot of the pesto I made from our basil over Summer.
Soot has appeared to remind me that cat treat time has been ignored so I'm off to distribute little filled fishy pellets.
