@Cousin_Creditor if it helps, I can't tell you how many times I tried to cut down and failed back in the day - many many times. It was as it happens this thread that finally did the trick for me, but it did happen gradually. One thing I did find that helped was "putting off" the drinking, as in, telling myself I could have a drink if I liked, "but not yet", in another hour, or another couple of hours. Then when the time passed I'd either find the urge had passed, or, if it hadn't, I'd tell myself the same thing again.
Do you know why you started? Is it just habit? Maybe there's something you could change about your day that might make it easier to stop?
Anyway tomorrow is a new day - the most important thing is to keep trying/showing up xx5 -

I am up to 15/24 including today, thank you cathybird.Pollyanna24, going almost a year without drinking is fantastic, a really great achievement. I liked your post as it chimed with my own experience, I could definitely relate to the part where you said you hardly knew what to do with yourself that first ‘dry’ weekend. When I joined this thread in 2018 I went straight into 3 months alcohol-free after many years of drinking just about every single weekend over several decades (apart from very occasional enforced breaks due to having to work nights across a weekend). Those first few weekends with no alcohol felt very odd indeed for me. Since 2018 I’ve been going for longer spells of up to 6 months at a time not drinking anything at all, trying to rewire my brain and change my mindset so that I can enjoy a Friday or Saturday night without alcohol.
It’s still a work in progress for me and I guess it always will be.6 -
Hello. I stumbled across this thread by accident. It is odd that it is almost hidden in a debt free area on the site. I have found the comments to be most helpful as I too am struggling with alcohol. I have been off it for 35 days now. I got myself into some terrible situations with it, like being refused service in Wetherspoons, so I knew I must have been bad. Would it be okay to join in here? Many thanks.7
