Thirsk charity shops are a nicely arranged square of potential!
I did quite well this afternoon too, though I resisted a few bits that I quite liked. Yorkshire Cancer Research was the best as they had one of 'my' Denby Homestead mugs, £4 (which I've instructed DH is to go in my Christmas stocking - I'm not sure Father Christmas can get hold of things like that). They also have bundles of un-banded mixed embroidery threads at £1 and a hardback book (for DH's Christmas stocking) at £2.50. The embroidery thread is, I've just discovered, better than sewing thread for certain mending tasks: I fixed two of DH's jumpers and two of my tee shirts using a single strand thickness which is closer to the commercial fibre weight so it blends well.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. Miró said:I seem to have replaced the Saturday Bedale Car Boot with a meander around Thirsk now. Today’s finds…. A dark grey cashmere polo neck sweater by Isle for £3.99 and a pair of b/n Hobbs lined, black & white ‘birds eye check’, wide legged trousers with turn ups for £5.99 from the Herriot Hospice shop. Gonna take some getting used to this stylee of trousers after all the slimfit/straightlegged styles!! How does one wear them….help please?6

@goldfinches many thankees for the links….very interesting. Can’t see me taking to the wide legged trouser look but interesting to try them out. That’s the great thing about charity shops, you can try new styles out cheaply and if it doesn’t work it’s not a complete wast of money.5

Rosa_Damascena said:@Cherryfudge - I love the personalisation! And so simple to do, I may give it a go should any garment require disguising.
Had a pretty fine time at the chazzers earlier today. 2 handbags at £3 each (I had to stop myself at 2, but could have easily bought many more!), a cute melamine sandwich tray with a Kidston-esque design, 2 scarves and a long woollen jacket from M&S for a further £5.. Bring on the cucumber sandwiches, scones and cream!

. No such problem with straight or wide-legged trews, paired with something well-fitting on the top half, they can in fact emphasise the waist very nicely.

I buy moisturizer in charity shops to slather on my feet and legs which get dry. Even 5p and 10p samples !
That said, I don't think I've seen moisturiser in charity shops, I wonder if it varies by area?I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

This grey next tee with a silver star on the front £1
@Miró I too am keen to experiment with the wide trouser look, although as I’m only 5 foot. 1 I’m not sure how well it will work. As I had half an hour to spend after checking out the CSS in town I popped into M and S and tried on some of their wide legged jersey trousers with the stripes down the side. I thought they looked ok, although I obviously wasn’t going to buy new clothes😂. So I think I’ll look out for them in CSS, but only quite heavy material and probably without what DH calls the go faster stripes.
@MrsStepford and @Cherryfudge I always get moisturiser from CS when I can find it. It’s often round the bric-à-brac area.8 -
@Miró and @Potternerd I meant to point out this page of pins which Whitney of TomKat Stitchery posted after a recent trip to NYC 22 NYC Fall Style ideas in 2023 | style, nyc fall, fashion (pinterest.co.uk) and here's her YT video where she comments on ten of the looks and gives pattern suggestions for sewists to recreate them 22 NYC Fall Style ideas in 2023 | style, nyc fall, fashion (pinterest.co.uk).
There are several photos of wide legged trousers and she discussed styles she'd seen being worn and I've definitely seen similar outfits around here so thought you might find it helpful.
@Potternerd - I thought your OH's name for the side stripes on the M&S trousers very funny, thanks for passing it on. I shall enjoy a chuckle next time I pass through the racks on my way to the Food Hall.
