Thanks for the new link Cherryfudge, that worked. Hopefully that’s not the death knell for us, it being more mainstream now
Mind looking at some of the prices in the pictures stuff…
Ha haa goldfinches! If I come across a ‘twinned with goldfinches’ badge I’ll wear it happily
Did you grab a lovely looking Italian Miró? Anything clues as to how they do it…?Oh and can I suggest a change of perspective goldfinches? Buy that Ralph Lauren skirt and wear it wherever rather than waiting for a swish invitation to arrive. I’ve got a posh friend who works in a cs, she always lifts me Jaeger cashmere jumpers for they fit me nicely. I wear them everywhere, even just doing domestic nonsense cos why not when it’s only a £5 jumper

So much to read, so little time.6 -
2 Tony Laithwaite for Dartington stemless wine glasses 50 p each. DH likes them for G and T glasses (we already have one, also CS). Less favoured G and T glasses will be added to the donation pile.9

Odd that people have had different experiences with the original link!
NB. As I researched it based on your information, does that make it, topically, a second hand link?

I did have a chat with my very glamorous room maid who informed me that it's best to aways go for heavyweight linen and silk rather than the thinner stuff as it is more resistant to creasing. She also said that Italians go for either the uncrumpled look or the very crumpled look in order to be regarded as stylish. The slightly crumpled look is just not the done thing(??) I was bemoaning my rather crumpled two linen dresses which I hung in the bathroom to try and steam the creases out only to find on my return that evening that she had taken them and pressed them for me. Was expecting a heavy charge on the bill but no....seemingly she had just done it as a nice gesture!!YoungBlueEyes said:Thanks for the new link Cherryfudge, that worked. Done the rounds of the local chazza shops today but everything that drew my eye was either the wrong size or overpriced. Hoping for better luck tomorrow in Otley

Thanks for that - now read it.YoungBlueEyes said:
I don't want to judge, but £140 - £200 for second-hand? I thought I was spendthrift buying a pure wool Liberty jumper for £25! ( It is lovely and warm, though - had a look online and something similar seemed to start at £200 new!)2024 Fashion on the Ration - 10/66 coupons used

That does it, I'm doomed, doomed I tell you! First I discover that my scarf tying is slapdash and scruffy and now I am told that anything more than standing as still as a statue when wearing linen and silk simply isn't done. If only I'd been born a patrician Roman matron then I could have had litter bearers, as it is I shall just have to keep on getting around under my own steam while looking somewhat crumpled. Drat and double drat.Miró said:

I think this is the general consensus! Paying more for second hand than I'd pay for new? But of course if you are used to paying out hundreds for a garment, and want to reuse or simply reduce your outgoings, even £200 can be a saving of both money and resources.Wraithlady said:

And of course there's the whole thing about sustainability being one of the 'in' things to latch onto.
One of the things I'm picking up from various articles and also from 'Fashion on the Ration' is about buying for quality: so some of this expensive charity shopping may be about that. People think that spending more - apart from the dichotomy of 'I got this for less but I still bought into this brand and I have £200 to throw about' - spending more means better quality. We could discuss that all day!
Also, corners are being cut in the fashion industry in order to save money: thinner fabric, less detailed finish, etc. The following is from a sustainable clothing newsletter I received a week or so ago. As the voice of industry insiders, it's an interesting insight:What most brands do when costs rise is make their products more cheaply: using less skilled labour, using cheaper materials, replacing expensive wool or cotton with a greater percentage of cheap polyester or acrylic, or simply making the garment thinner.
People are buying upmarket second hand in the hope of getting something that will last and stay good, but I expect it's basically a market forces thing: we love our brands (at least I do) and we have our budgets (either literally or a ball park figure) so our norms differ. As you'll see from my posts, I'm a great one for car boot sales, where you can still get something great for 50p (sometimes). That's far cheaper than most charity shops, but charity shops are all-weather and do raise money for good causes.
Sorry, this is turning into an essay! I think I'm trying to say £200 for something second hand is only cheap if it's a house or car, but people's ideas of cheap can vary, and not everyone is buying second hand purely for economic reason. (There's that 'thrill of the chase' element, for instance!)I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
