People who can’t afford to heat their homes are now going to be hit by burst pipes as the temperature is going to jump up today,   my neighbour has had a burst cold feed pipe in his bungalow loft,  it blew off his stopcock and the water had to be turned off at his outside feed, by which time part of his lounge celing had come down and his carpets ruined -   luckily another neighbour (plumber)  had the long reach tool to enable him to do it.  They are only a few quid at toolstation so we now have one!

We’ve used 480kwh of gas since the 8th December.

"Cost this year is almost 3 times same period last year despite the lower use, what with the rates being almost 4 times last year"

My IHD says just over £5 just for today (gas + electricity) and it's not freezing - or lucnh-time!
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!

    Last year, Nov/Dec we (all-electric) used 1082kWh, cost £226.33.
1009kWh now for a full month between meter readings.  Total cost £328.02*.  At EPG would have cost £364.94

*Edit for clarity: the cost difference is due to being on Octopus Tracker (with some government subsidy) rather than what would have been more expensive on the (fully subsidised) SVT at EPG rate.

My boiler was actually on for 12hrs yesterday, used 90kwh. Live in a 2 bed lower cottage flat in central Scotland. My wife really feels the cold so my heating needs to stay on most of the day.

Not a Combi boiler? Combis use 25kWh. 90kWh would be miraculous though it is Christmas. 🙂 Guess you mean it wasn't actually running full on all that time.

    2021 Winter

    20.874p kWh 3rd October 2021 til 31st March 2022

    Oct 2021 663 kWh £138.39
    Nov 2021 845 kWh £176.39
    Dec 2021 910 kWh £189.95

    Total £504.73

    2022 Winter (estimated December)

    29.239p kWh

    Oct 2022 321 kWh £93.86
    Nov 2022 599 kWh £175.14
    Dec 2022 1000 kWh (estimate) £292.39

    Total £561.39

Difference £56.66 but I have had three £67 payments on top of this so far with three more to come.

Can't complain about what the government have done for others with the reduction in their kWh rates and the £400 as we embarked on a cutting down exercise and the fact we are so close too the first half of winter to last year is great reading even if aided by a mild start to winter.

Oh yes, so it is 🤦🏼 (once I've read people's signatures a few times, I then tend to tune them out)

Here are the figures is we were on current SVT rates

If I were on the SVT protected by EPG my area is 35.05p kWh

    Oct 2022 321 kWh £99.70
    Nov 2022 599 kWh £210.01
    Dec 2022 1000 kWh (estimate) £356.00

    Total £665.71

So the first half of winter if we were on the SVT EPG protected rate would be £160.98 more expensive than last year but if you take off the three £67 monthly payments we are actually £40.02 up.

As said above we went on an energy reduction exercise in the summer, changed ASHP settings and hot water settings to get ready for winter.

So for us we are better off so far this winter even if we were on SVT rates

90kWh over 12 hours would be ~7.5kWh used per hour - sounds about right for a typical heating load.
