Keeping a domain and website registered doesn't cost much.
(Probably much less than the tax breaks, etc. that come with being a registered charity).

Was they ever going to ask a fee for access because they claimed the advertisement wasn't good enough to run the website?

I'm sure I used to read that before I joined.

I never heard that- and being honest the Youreable forum was very advert free compared to many.
There is a different and quite popular one that did and still does charge a subscription for access to certain things
Sorry, not for me, I will share what I I learnt and know about benefits for free.
  • I thought the people that supplied the equipment had their own adds on there.

My browser adblockers are good ones. :)
  • As long as they're free I use Duck Duck for mostly anything I see as a threat.

Just 'Adblock' (not 'Adblock Plus') and Malwarebytes Browser Guard.
Both are free and MBG is one of the "must haves" for anyone who takes their online security seriously.

Mailware bytes is subscription.  I guess you had a package deal. I only use Android and Play Protection but have always learned how to remove any threats or locks.

That's a different product (and it has a free version too). Malwarebytes the company have a number of products, both paid for and free.
Malwarebytes Antimalware (Antivirus) app is indeed subscription for real-time protection, or FREE if you just want to run a threat scan regularly/occasionally.
(I use the Free scan-only versions on both Windows and Android).

Malwarenytes Browser Guard is a different thing.
It is a FREE browser add-on that protects your browsing in real-time.

(I also run an occasional scan with Malwarebytes AdwCleaner on Windows - that's also FREE: https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner).
