    Hi,
Has anyone had as many problems I have recently had with Tesco DVD rental? I know that they use iLove Film as their carriers, and some discs will not be playable but not as many as I have received. There is also their lack of customer service; for a well know national company I honestly thought that they would have been a bit more switched on. I would no longer recommend this DVD Rental supplier to anyone I know and to all of you who I don't.
    Regards,
    Josh.

I have never had any problems, I have had a few films go missing over the 5 or so years i have been a member, but other than that no problem at all. I had had a few disks that are not playable but if you report it you get sent another copy. Perhaps it is your DVD player?

I signed up for a supposedly free trial period on Tesco DVD Rental, during which I was supposed to be able to borrow two DVDs free of charge. I haven't borrowed any DVDs, but today I find that the company has debited £3.97 to my credit card, i.e. one month's subscription fee. It's only a small amount of money, but I detest being misled. That's the end of Tesco DVD Rental for me!

Yes I also too a free 30 day trial and was charged after 15 days despite the fact the T&Cs fail to mention this:
    1. This offer expires at midnight on 31st March 2011. 2. To register for your free trial, a valid credit or debit card is required. 3. Your free trial expires 30 days after registration. 4. You will NOT be charged during the free trial, unless you change your subscription package. 5. Depending on the package you choose, you may have either 1, 2 or 3 discs out at any one time. 6. You can cancel your subscription at any time. 7. Existing subscribers or those who have previously enjoyed a free trial with any LOVEFiLM-powered site are not eligible. 8. At the end of your free trial, you will automatically become a paying member unless you cancel your subscription and return any of our discs in your possession BEFORE the end of your free trial. 9. To receive your free cinema tickets, you must validly register for the free trial, put at least ten discs in your rental list and we must have dispatched your first disc to you. 10. Within 30 days from dispatch of your first disc, we will post your cinema tickets to you at the delivery address on your account as at the date of dispatch. 11. This offer may not be redeemed in conjunction with any other offer and is limited to one per household. 12. Terms and conditions apply. Visit https://www.lovefilm.com for further details.

    Hello,
I recently took a Lovefilm PAYG contract. It's ok, but I realize it's not yet exactly what I want. I thought you can choose a film, rent it by post and send it back when you are finished, until the next time you want to rent, but I guess this is "pay per view" rather than pay as you go. They still choose the film they send you within your selection list, so, no guarantee you will receive a specific film. Also, since they automatically send you the next film, and automatically re-charge you for 3 credits whenever you finished using them, it's not exactly payg, is it? So, if I understand well, the only way to watch one film in a while, is to keep the DVD at home, potentially for several weeks, and only send it back when you want to watch a new one? That doesn't seem terribly efficient for them?
Anyway, it's not too bad, but I was wondering if anyone knows about a real pay-per-view DVD rental, where you can literally rent a specific film once in a while? What I like about DVD rental by post, apart from the fact that I don't have a videoshop near me, is the huge choice (not terribly interested in the latest blockbusters).
    Thanks!

The closest I've found to a PAYG contract, and one of the cheapest ways of renting movies with no tie-in is easyCinema - http://dvd.easycinema.com/ - also part of Lovefilm. £8.13 for 4 credits that last for 3 months, 1 rental at a time. It has an optional auto top-up facility so you don't necessarily need to buy more credits or cancel when you run out.
  • Just wanted to share my experiences with the big 2 on here. I was with Lovefilm for a fair few months. Was happy overall with the service apart from the followjng:

    - too many dirty discs(no not p0rn films, actual dirt on discs!!!)

    - they kept trying to limit me to 1 envelope per 2 discs, negating the advantage of the 2 unlimited deal I was on

    - while they offered movies to watch online between rentals, I found the selection pretty dire

    - there was a fraction of movies that were permanently unavailable. The 3 I can remember were "Public Enemies", "Cirque Du Freak - Vampire's Assistant" and "Inglorious Basterds"

I raised all the above points with them and while they responded, their responses were usually aloof, unconcerned or just irrelevant to the point I'd raised. When I pushed it I found that the unavailable movies were due to a dispute with a studio over prices, discs were deliberately not cleaned and the onus was on the customer to clean or report a problem. They actually sent me a cleaning cloth in response, so I sent them info on ultrasonic DVD cleaning machines. After a few dirty discs too many I quit.
Haven't been renting but a couple of weeks decided to try Blockbuster. Immediately ran into the same 1 envelope problem, dirty discs, no streaming movies(though same price as Lovefilm), and a complete absence of customer sevrice when I reported these problems. So I've quit that as well now.
If I had to call it I'd say Lovefilm is the better service in terms of turnaround times, responses, the streaming, and pricing, but it's a close call, and neither is good enough for me to continue with them.
What a shame this sector has been completely monopolised by these 2 players. It means there's nowhere else to go now and of course it means they really don't have to try to improve their service or make it very competitive. Guess I'll try reading some books now!
  • LoveFilm has now lowered their prices, undercutting Tesco DVD rentals. Unlimited 2 disk rentals are now £9.99/mth, compared to Tesco's £11.97!

That said, I've stopped my Lovefilm subscription a few months now, because I don't use it very often, and it works out cheaper when I go to my local Blockbuster store and use their Rewards vouchers instead :D
