    We used 3.34 kWh in total from 1pm - 4pm on Monday, then 0.052 kWh from 5pm - 6pm.

Octopoints earned 4.592 = £5.74. That's just from moving normal activity and turning off the fridges, freezers etc.

Am I right in thinking that Octopus still has a test session left this month?
Or can it class one of the live saving sessions as its test?
^^ aimed at you expert folk, that have read the rules and criteria and stuff.
I can't find anything in the rules which says live sessions remove a test one.. although it's probably fairly reasonable if they do decide to do that. Maybe an onboarding early next week for some of the late joiners?

With the morning session, I programmed my car to charge from 5am till 7am (even though the IDA was until 8am, I still couldn't bring myself to charge my car during peak rate period).
Why not? Peak rate is more expensive than off-peak, except in the context of the IDA - charging the car then is better than free as you get paid for it.
Gas: warm air central heating, instant water heater, Octopus tracker
Electricity: 3kw south facing solar array, EV, Octopus intelligent

Exactly. on the 23rd I spent £7 on peak rate electric and was rewarded with £17 in points.
Batteries filled up, two lots of washing done and then dried, dinner cooked in oven, dishwasher used - All for free with a £10 profit.

So on the 24th we shifted £8 of electricity and got paid £55

It is an adjustment of mindset especially for people stuck in their ways and those that have cut down usage to the bone.

    But it's worth it

Do you mind if I ask how many kWh did you shift from the 1630 to 1800 slot? Would you normally use this amount in that timeframe?
I’m trying to work out how this scheme would work for me. I have 15 kW that could fit into a 1.5 hr window, but my high usage never happens during the day.

Well the answer depends on your knowledge of the energy shift equation supplied by the National Grid (somewhere page 3/4 of this thread)

So for that particular session 16:30-18:00 you need to know your 10 previous days usage in those 3 half hours to form the average.

This is where most people stop and think ok that adds up to 1kwh if I switch everything off 16:30-18:00 in the session I will make nearly 1kwh at £x.xx

This is why even reasonable users of electricity not just low users may not bother with the scheme because the devil is in the detail.

The key period is a 3 hours window starting 4 hours before the energy shift period starts. Is for this particular period 12:30-15:30. (The in day adjustment period)

To get to the answer of your question we now try and shift as much normal usage for the whole day into that in day adjustment period not just things we would have used 16:30-18:00.

As this event was longer being 90mins and was paying £4.37 per kWh saved we decided to also shift some normal electricity use from later in the week forward such as a Legionella burn (we are all electric here with an ASHP just for info)

So we did the following in the in day adjustment period 12:30-15:30

    Legionella burn (bought forward)
ASHP heating turned up to max for the three hour slot (this meant it didn't kick back in til just before midnight after being turned off at 16:30
Heated the garage gym for two workouts(delayed sessions from the morning to fit this session)
Dishwasher (held off using night before)
    1 washing machine load
1 washing machine 90oC drum clean (bought forward a week)
    1 Tumble dryer load
2 hour batch cook of food in the oven
    Charged everything laptops/tablets/phones etc
Dehumidifier running through the session in the garage gym

Generally our daily average in Jan is 32-33kwh per day as we are all electric, home all day and have an ASHP. Cold days like the 24th Jan we do hit 40-42kwh a day due to the weather compensation curve on the heat pump.

So we shifted 29kwh into that 3 hour session. 10kwh of which were shifted from later in the week and 19kwh shifted around as explained above.

It's not just about shifting from that time slot - for me it's about shifting for the whole week (or longer).

I'll wash and dry bedding or towels... I'll opt to cook a roast dinner... I'll load the dishwasher with cups from the shelf that get a bit dusty over time... stuff that would have happened some point, but being paid to use energy I would have used anyway.

I earned £30 for Monday's session, and it should be around £65 for Tuesday's.

I have had an email from Octopus stating I am one of a small handful of customers whose readings they could not retrieve for 23rd January so they have given me £1.74. According to them that is the average earnings. I can see the 30 minute readings on my account, so is it worth asking them to look again.
