I'm heating the house by "oven" at the moment, no washing left after yesterday. Battery up at 90% already. Running out of things that need doing, don't think charging my toothbrush will make much difference.
When we bought this house, the previous owners had 4 electric heaters installed (thin ones that you screw on the wall), even though the house also has gas CH.

Clearly they are now essential for the saving sessions, but I also use them with solar panels - on cold and sunny winter days I turn them on to warm the house up. Lowest setting for each is 500watts, the house warms up quickly with electrics being more efficient than gas, and for free with the solar. Found them really useful in this way!

Gas: warm air central heating, instant water heater, Octopus tracker
Electricity: 3kw south facing solar array, EV, Octopus intelligent

I've got a 3 bed bungalow and switch everything off apart from my freezer, router and landline for the switch offs.  I've just got my 19 January hour results - 56 Octopoints?  I've never had such a low figure.  I'll still do tonight and see what happens.
You really need to read this post from the start and learn about the in day usage weighting

I found this G. B. National Grid status (templar.co.uk) (I know many of this boards stalwarts will already know about this site but it was new to me :)
I wonder if the efforts of the session will be 'visible'

I also got only 56 Octopoints on the morning one. Mind you, I just decided to read in bed and started work late. Couldn't be bothered to do otherwise. Freezer, fridge and modem carried on as usual.

I hit a remarkably similar 17,236 for the 19th. Fingers crossed for a little bit better on the 23rd. Today's usage was limited by the car being 90% charged already.

    @TheGardener That is a usefull site, there's also https://electricinsights.co.uk

I got 1344 points from the 19th bringing me up to 8700 points total. I'm not sure what my actual 'saving' was since they don't seem to show actual details any more, it was all export though.

As far as today went, gas might not be as bad as coal, but the emissions profile of the grid is still pretty dirty so I didn't want to use any extra without good reason, and there wasn't much with the laundry already done for the week. Went into the session with 2kWh on the IHD and ended it on 2.4.

3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). Octopus Flux
  • I've earned £3.63 across 6 sessions. I hear what you are all saying about the same day adjustments, but I don't have an electric car to charge or any high use items like washing to do at the drop of a hat. I do on the other hand have two little ones who need feeding in that saving window and aquariums and TV and internet fridge, that are running and I don't wish to stop. So unless you can convince me that I need to WASTE electric in that adjustment period, I don't know what else I can do?

I got my results in too.

I received 11,304 Octopoints for Friday 19th January, that works out as £14.13.

Looking at my usage for the build up (5am to 8am) before the session, I used 17.33kWh, which cost me £2.71 (i'm still currently on 15.64p) so a decent profit there.
  • So unless you can convince me that I need to WASTE electric in that adjustment period, I don't know what else I can do?
Obviously it will depend on your specific circumstances, but I'm retired so I'm generally at home (especially in January) during the 3 hour period. I'm trying to be creative - we nearly always have washing/drying to do - or I can do a towel wash or wash our pets blankets/beds. Today I used the automatic cooker cleaner for 2 hours and similar for our microwave. I also turned on our electric fire which will reduce our gas use. I'm hoping for a big payout for today's session!
