There is a new session tomorrow, got prompted on the app an hour ago.
2 hours this time! Have you seen the Agile export prices? 180p/kWhr. I would suggest that those with batteries on Agile export might have to do some sums to work out whether the savings sessions or exporting will be more profitable. It may also be a time when Octopus exercises their clause:
     15. If you are one of our Smart Tariff customers or are part of any of our Smart Meter trials, we reserve the right to remove you from the Service at any point.
4.3kW PV, 3.6kW inverter. Octopus Agile import, gas Tracker. Zoe. Ripple x 3. Cheshire

That clause might be them foreseeing abuse of people exporting in the hours proceeding the session period?
  • Presumably, those on Smart tariffs are most likely to be early adopters with low energy use? So as you say, that might me their pre-emptive get out clause for all the system gaming that has been discussed above?!

Talking of which... are today's in day adjustment hours 1pm - 4pm?

I’m planning a wash load & tumble dry (which I hardly ever do) & some ironing (ditto).
OH says not worth putting dishwasher on as its only half full😕
We have to go out @ 2.45, so I’ll need to multitask. Might also put CH on early so it can be off 5-7.
  • I'm loath to turn the CH off - the house has yet to reach 17C.  Does the boiler pump use much electricity?

No surprise - have you seen the wholesale market prices for that time tomorrow?!
In theory the test events aren’t in any kind of reaction to wholesale prices are they? That’s only for live events?
If you have to schedule a test - why not do it when the benefits are most useful?

Plus they can still continue to claim "we have not needed to activate this service", a useful political message to argue against indicators of shortage.
I’m surprised we’ve not seen a test on a weekend - because the maths gets harder there with only using 4 days (and maybe even then the median two of those 4 qualifying days?)

or an “emergency” test with on-the-day notice.
I don't think there is likely to be an "emergency" test period with on the day notice. Simply because that is not how NG operate their DFS (demand for service) notices. You know how at the end of November we nearly had a real event that wasn't a test? If that hadn't been withdrawn, it would have been the "emergency" test. When NG issue a DFS, they issue a "standby" the day before it is required which has fairly wide parameters. This allows preparation for an event. They then keep processing the data and decide whether they really need it or not and issue a confirmation or a withdrawal. That confirmation can be quite close to the event, but it shouldn't be a surprise because of the previous standby notice.

The DFS is something that has been running for many years. It is only recently that NG have started trialling its expansion to domestic supplies, so we hear more about it.
That wasn't a test though. There are two separate programmes. DFS Live and DFS Test.

These events are happening under DFS Test, the cancelled one was on DFS Live.

The DFS specifications allow for on-the-day notifications of a DFS requirement, which aren't warned about, and suppliers will have 1 hour from those notifications to submit their bids. This is kinda a backup "emergency" system for when the forecasting predictions end up lower (say, because forecasters got it wrong and it ended up colder and snowier than expected, so more usage was used). We've not had a test on the DFS Test channel for this emergency on-the-day, no pre-notification system; and it feels like giving suppliers a chance to test their systems for bidding at 1 hour notice, and opting customers in quickly for that case is something that should happen at some point.

Not too much, keep warm and maybe light a few candles! (just kidding, LED lights don't use much either)

Very interestingly noticed that National Grid under-predicted demand by a much greater amount than usual between 1pm and 4pm today - I wonder what could have caused that.
Do you have a link to those stats handy?
