Octopus Saving Session

  • I can't help but feel these sessions are a bit pointless. Anyone with the right gear can game the system to get the money back, but where any benefit gained is only because you used much more during the day, it just seems pointless. Of course, if there was clearer comms about it, I might feel different.
They should be comparing for example normal usage 5pm - 6pm with 5pm-6pm savings session and rewarding those who shifted usage away from that period.
  • As long as anyone with the right gear's not increasing consumption overall but helping shift it to times when there's lower demand it's win/win isn't it? Domestic power consumption  goes up by 50%+ between 4pm and 6-7pm - charging my battery in the afternoon then not drawing from the grid later helps smooth that out. OK it's all a bit crude at the moment, but the point of trials is to work out the best way to do things.

But then if the day was colder than usual (for example), even if you did cut down some normal use but heating used that and more, you would not see any reward.

Has anyone managed to come up with a spreadsheet to replicate the calculations? I'm on Octopus Go, for example if I have a load of washing to do, dishwasher to run, car to charge, etc., normally I would do it overnight, it would be nice to know if I could save money by doing them in the afternoon instead.

I've calculated that the net gain for shifting usage from the cheap Octopus Go rate to the monitoring period is about 48p for every kW/h shifted. My Go tariff is 7.5p night and 34.5p day so it will change slightly depending on your tariff.
  • I see that Octopus are also paying 100 points ( a huge 12.5p) if you sign up for consecutive sessions, so worth signing up even if you don't actually save any Kwh in the period.

Wow so it's definitely worth plugging the Zoe in then!

Was there someone who found the actual proper algorithm somewhere that's being used?

I'll have a go at throwing together a calculator by using the octopus API to load past data and then give you a slider on what usage in the proceeding 3 hours (1 hour before) the start of the session to figure out what the saving would be if there's a proper description of the calculation somewhere.

I think they have over thought it.

All they needed to do was look at 24 hours usage, do the % of day used during the peak time session, if its below a % you get rewarded.

This also would reward people who routinely use low power during peak, instead of some now maybe gaming the system and increasing power close to peak.

A post a few replies up mentioned if they extended the window to at least 7 hours for the monitoring the gaming would be cut off so 24 hours would be good or at the very least do it for 16 hours from 6am to 10pm..
