I can understand why people want to maximise their profit from these savings sessions and load shifting to the hours before or after the session seems sensible. However, deliberately maximising your usage by consuming electricity that you wouldn’t otherwise have used doesn’t seem ethical. Who is it that ultimately pays for these saving sessions?
For me it's simply charging the car, which I would have done after 9:30pm at 5p per kWh. As it happened I paid £4.85 for 20kWh which would have cost only £1 later. But that 'earned' £13.66 worth of OctoPoints for a net gain of £9.81.

I can't imagine their intention was for me to shift the usage from 21:30-00:30 back to 13:30-16:30, but that was what they incentivised. Some simple adjustments to the formula would fix that.

No surprise there's another load shifting session so soon with the doldrums in the north sea today.

The Octopus website seems very slow right now, guess everyone else is trying to sign up too.

Well after making the effort and not even being in the house for most of the first one I achieved a massive 9p. Second session, I lost heart in the whole thing, opted in but didn't really do anything. Was in the house with lights on, but managed to save 62% and earn 36p. Seems the results are more dependent on what happens elsewhere in your usage than they are on what you do in the actual session. Today, I'm off out for the whole day and won't be back until the session is ended, but I have now got Christmas lights which have gone up on timer. I've still opted in and will be intrigued to see how this one plays out.

Thanks for heads up. I'm out today but son is in to keep an eye on a few things.

Was planning to do clothes wash and dishwasher this evening  Have just set both to come on between 1:30 and 4:30. Will be interesting to see result although probably about most I can tweak it by.

Although I said earlier that I saved nothing on the second session it now appears I got 22p on the session when I thought I would have saved nothing as I didn't do anything different in either session to save any electric.
Someone please tell me what money is

It really is as simple as use more 1.30-4.30 this afternoon and as little as possible over the Session hour, gain more reward

  • I can't help but feel these sessions are a bit pointless. Anyone with the right gear can game the system to get the money back, but where any benefit gained is only because you used much more during the day, it just seems pointless. Of course, if there was clearer comms about it, I might feel different.
