So perhaps some clever person can confirm this for me. I've only done 2 sessions so far, the 15th where I got 416 Octopoints and last night which hasn't updated yet.

I am on Octopus GO (40p/7.5p), and normally I'd have the dishwasher and a few other things on after 00:30 tonight. If I put these on after 1pm today, then cut usage right down between 5 and 6pm, I'll actually get more benefit? Was assuming it only took into account what I'd normally use between 5 and 6 but that'd bonkers!

Or would this not be the case as my day tariff is high at 40p?
You would obviously be paying 32.5p more per unit for using them - but everything you use between 1pm and 4pm makes the target against which they measure your savings higher.

Whether the extra you get paid for the bigger 'savings' is more than the extra you spend on the usage, I'm not completely sure.  I think it probably would be.
The "gain" for every kWh used between 1pm and 4pm is 75p so the net gain would be 42.5p shifting the load from overnight to between 1pm and 4pm.

Ah I see, thanks for explaining. Be interesting to see if they keep that way of calculating it going forward!

Would the useage between 4-5pm have any baring at all?
In theory could someone leave a 10 kWh shower running between 1-4pm and get £7.50 per hour?

The hour right before the start of the saving session is not included in any of the calculations.

Thee only thing I'm not totally clear on is whether the unadjusted baseline for the in day adjustment excludes the (now inflated) usage from the reference 3 hour window on the previous Saving Session days. That could really diminish the returns. The wording of the calculation is pretty wooly and I still can't get the exact result Octopus came up with no matter how I adjust my interpretation of the formula.

It would be in the rolling 10-day average, but diluted by all of the other days on which there wasn't a session.

Although there is a strange bit in the definitions that might suggest it isn't actually all of the preceding 10 days used, but (depending on reading and circumstances) either 5 or 8 of them.

This is exactly what I got upset about.. I've cancelled my account but hey they don't close it for 14 days...

WHY would it be called an "inday" adjustment that is applied to the baseline giving either an uplift or down lift IF it used data from anything other than the day of the said event.

Sorry but SparkyGrad wound me up so much I ended up breaching forum rules, forum rage I guess.  x x x
  • I'm currently drawing between 13:00 and 16:00 today as much power as I can without blowing my 60amp incomer fuse, just short of 14.5kw costing me £7.56 for which I will return approximately £32.60 of octopus points... plus a bonus for been in top 10% when I run on battery for the hour between 17:00 and 18:00, plus a few more points for taking part in multiple events.. No brainer.

Has anybody had a top 10% bonus from second session ????

Questions are being asked on Twitter, I have not seen any answers yet as to why British Gas are paying in region of £4 kWh today in comparison to what Octopus are paying to its customers.
  • Sorry, NO, I lied, no to 10% on last session only "you've earned 100 extra OctoPoints for continuing your streak! "

    LOL
  • I think £2.25 if limit for trial and £4  is potential for real event, but only speculation...
