Your big challenge now is that your opening readings you provided to BG in September are likely to also be wrong, and you can't go back in time to read them.

Not too big a challenge (mathematically that is, the bureaucratics of getting it sorted may be) - from the recorded kWh gas readings they have a record of how many kWh have been used since the opening reading, so it is just a matter of working out how many units that was and subtracting that from the current reading.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,

UPDATE - BG didn't accept that the readings had been wrong as things still didn't add up so they booked an appointment for someone to come read the meters. Waited in all day, nobody turned up! In temper I took pics of every screen on each of the meters & emailed them (15pics from each meter)! No contact from BG but my account has been updated and I am I  £192 credit.

Suppliers must not bill on kWh readings from any gas meter. They have to use gas volume converted to kWh using the average calorific value for the gas supplied during the billing period. When calculating kWh, gas meters use a fixed calorific value which is banned - for billing purposes - under Ofgem regulations.

The important thing for the OP to check is that the new credit balance is based on an accurate gas volume meter index reading.
