    Gas hasn't been a problem, it's not too high or expensive

    So the meter is reading correctly, it seems...but usage has gone right down to normal amounts before all this happened... I'm at a lost of what to do

    That at least is some good news -  hope it stays that way.

    My guess is that your uncle was using a electric heater.

    It’s been so warm that any electric heaters being used on a thermostat would probably not come on.  Has he been using heaters and either not know he was or forgetting he was?
