Octopus Saving Sessions

How much do they expect us to reduce our consumption by?
And will those who already use a lot - gain the most?
We average 3kWh per day - which would appear to be pretty low already,?

Anyone who already has low peak usage as a baseline I guess will have the least benefit. I signed up regardless and will see what happens, kind of an experiment of curiosity.[Deleted User] said:
The important point is that Octopus will not be advising customers of sessions in advance. It follows that to accrue a benefit, usage in the preceding 10 days must be high and usage during the actual session low.Alnat1 said:Not sure I totally understand what the above from the T&C means but definitely compared to very recent use at a similar time of day.The ‘unfairness’ in the scheme is that those who have invested in solar and a battery which reduces Grid demand at peak periods get no benefit.0 -
I imagine it’ll be similar to their trial earlier in the year - https://octopus.energy/blog/results-big-dirty-turn-down-trial-paid-off-peak-energy/
I was part of it and this is an example of the emails I received during the trial:
For the Saving Sessions they have suggested to turn notifications on for the Octopus app instead so perhaps this will be where we will be notified.0 -
From the FAQs
Common questions about Saving Sessions | Octopus EnergyWe’ll look at your historical smart meter data leading up to a Session, and calculate what you usually use at that time of day, on average.
If the Session is on a weekday, we’ll look at your half-hourly usage over the last 10 weekdays (excluding saving session days). If the Session is on a weekend, we’ll look at your half hourly usage over the last 4 weekend days. These half hourly averages are then subject to an ‘In Day Adjustment’ which will make adjustments based on how much energy you’ve used on the day of the session.
We then use these adjusted half-hourly averages as a benchmark – so you’ll earn points for every kilowatt hour you save during your Session.

Right - so they paid £6 per kWh that you reduce your useage by - compared to the previous month - thats pretty goodThe only concern I have is that this is electricity / not gas - so my useage remains pretty constant througout the year

If it's a percentage reduction it works ok for low users.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Depends if the low use has any room to cut - if it's down to basically the background usage, apart from turning off e.g. the fridge/freezer and wifi, they might not be able to do the reduction.Alnat1 said:If it's a percentage reduction it works ok for low users.0 -
I'd definitely turn off the freezer for a few hours. I'd be ok with TV and PC off, hubby might not be so happy about it. He might start wanting to play Twister by candlelight, or other strange distractions if he gets bored so perhaps best I leave the TV on

Can't turn off the spare fridge yet because my Teeny Tiny Tortoise hatchling is in there having a short hibernation nap and he really needs to stay between 4 and 5C. He'll be woken up at the end of November though.
Hmmmm, fish tank pump (die, die silly inherited fish) ermmm no that would be too mean, can't do it.
I'm sure I can think of a few watts somewhere I can cut.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Hmmm Twister by candlelight. Isn’t that one of Farrow & Ball’s new range?Alnat1 said:I'd definitely turn off the freezer for a few hours. re the teeny tiny tortoise hatchling - would switching the spare fridge off for a couple of hours affect the temperature? Assuming you didn’t open the door.I remember a neighbour years ago incubating tortoise eggs in the warming drawer of her aga. She was a reluctant cook who’d inherited it (aga, not tortoise) with the house & used this as an excuse for not cooking for several weeks.0 -
I'm not sure and don't want to risk it. Trip's (short for triple T) parents are also winding down for their 4 month holiday in the fridge. I'd rather experiment with them as their larger body size will be more stable. 900g will hold the cold better than 12g 🥶Barnsley, South Yorkshire
