Good Afternoon fellow diary writers. So fed up with this weather now. Really wet & windy here, but not as bad as some areas on the south coast by the look of it.  End of the week is looking better, so I have noted a garden session in my diary. I am hoping to get the courgettes out and maybe the cucumbers? Not sure about the tomatoes yet...any tips?  Also I have carrot seeds that say I should be sowing them outside between March & June, so want to get those in if I can. And I have some potatoes that should be ok in the big tub now I think. I put the earlies in the other week, but not sure if it was too soon.  Think if the springs are going to be like this, I could do with finding room to put a green house or, have the roof changed on the dining room extension, where its only single roof, and turn it into a sun room and grow plants in there. At this rate there will be nothing in the garden.  We are away first week of June, so I want to know I can happily leave it all in the garden for DD to water and it will still be ok when we get back.

So what else has been going on?  Well yesterday DH declared that he is getting a substantial pay rise this year. Very pleased about that, and once I see how much it equates to every week, I will work out how much of it I can squirrel away to savings pots and OPs. Suppose I should let him have a bit more for his petrol allowance, as the price does seem to be going up a bit again lately, noticed 145.9 in Mr S yesterday, and last week I only paid 142.9

My D*bb**s card arrived in the post, so that means 2 free coffees a month and 10% off plants etc. I don't buy that much in that garden centre TBH, as they tend to be dearer to start with, but always worth having a look and especially good to get free coffee.

Don't think there's much more to add today, things are still going in the right direction which is good. So off to search for some more surveys now and do a good online exercise class.  Hope everybody has a good afternoon.

Great news about DH's pay rise, extra money is always a bonus.

  • Just catching up, I had a manic week last week and this week has been much of the same... I have no clue about gardening but your veggies seem to be doing very well! I'm not sure that the changeable weather would be good for them being outdoors just yet. It's been all over the place lately, much like our garden furniture!

Congrats on DH pay rise, that's great news!  I've also noticed that the price of fuel has started jumping up again, along with everything else it seems :(

I hope real life doesn't get in the way too much, and that you're OK? Sometimes you need a break from online and it really does help so I hope it did the trick for you

I’m not an expert on gardening by any stretch of the imagination but I would just nip those bottom leaves off. I know the bottom leaves of tomato plants turn yellow as the plant matures. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will advise. Have you fed them?

No, not fed them. Bought them a few weeks ago as small plants & they grew so quickly. I repotted them into bigger pots. The tomatoe plants are doing fine, its just the cucumbers & courgettes that look poorly

Those leaves dying at the bottom are seed leaves, so it might be time for them to drop off.

Cucumbers and courgettes are susceptible to over watering (they just rot off) and your compost looks quite damp. Let them dry out to the top surface (c. the first few mm) of the soil before watering and don’t let them sit in water in their trays.

I think it’s too early to plant out tender things like tomatoes and cucumbers. I don’t plant out in my greenhouse until end of May after the risk of all frost has passed, but your microclimate may be different to mine? If they are taking over the world and flopping around, put some little stakes in the pots with some kind of toppers to protect your eyes to support them?

Ooh thanks @KajiKita, never heard of seed leaves before.  I'd read that Cues needed lots of water, so maybe I over did it, although TBH, it doesn't feel that damp & they're not sitting in water at all. Its my 1st time doing cues, although I did manage quite a few courgettes the other year. I have staked the cues now, they are the climbing snack ones, so keeping fingers crossed
Yes, I did think it will be May before I can get them out

Just a quick update as I just seem so busy lately.  Must try and make more time to update properly

Started the day with a walk then came home and DH helped me weed the front garden after they all started to die off following my application of home made weedkiller the other day. Front garden now looks weed free and ready for a few new plants/pots.
After that we had hot cross bun with a cup of tea and I had a nice shower and washed my hair.
Managed to find a couple of surveys to to and now got some nice pork loin steaks cooking and try of roast veg/spuds. Just about to mix up a chocolate cake to make use of the oven being on.
Today was a NSD which is good

Will try and update more on the financial side in the week.
