I had a lovely person come to collect something yesterday. They brought me a small gift to say thank you, which was so nice of them - but when I took it from them I felt something sticky and I realised there was a half-sucked boiled sweet attached to it on the outside :rotfl: :rotfl: I didn't say anything... :p

Please note, we've now sorted this out, and have made friends

I recently gave away a table and chairs via Freecycle. It has now been listed on Ebay, ( I know it's mine as I covered the chairs, and 2 of the chairs are odd). I feel upset and angry.
I wanted this dining set to go to someone who couldn't afford one. My first choice of a new home was via the charity shop, but they wouldn't accept it without fire labels on the chairs.
I could have put it on Ebay, but I wanted to help someone.
It feels like a kick in the teeth.
It has really made me think twice about using Freecycle.
I've emailed the moderator, but haven't heard back yet.

I have no direct experience with Freecycle but I do know that SOME people use it as a way of offloading their rubbish.

I have lost count of the times that DH (in the trade) has been telephoned by people asking what could be wrong with their washing machine/dishwasher/tumble dryer. After he's asked some basic questions about their appliance it becomes clear that actually they have been "given it" (some then name Freecycle).

So far they have got a machine that has cost them NOTHING, now they want an over the phone diagnosis for NOTHING.

    Part 2 .........

Now, DH is a very tolerant soul and bearing in mind that they often call in the evenings or weekend (and sometimes just land on the doorstep) .... he does suggest they try a few things themselves. So they're STILL on a FREEBIE!

Then they ring back and say that hasn't worked so he then offers to call and see the appliance and I have been totally    when some even have the cheek to say "do you charge?"   NO! We're a blinking charity!!!

It gets even worse than this because they then twig that someone has kindly given them a pile of junk and they say "would you like it because I nearly broke my back getting it in here":rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Oh yeah, we'd love to take away your old heap of junk FOR FREE .... err NOT!:rotfl: :rotfl:

People very rarely give away anything that works properly and even if they THINK it works, if it's been standing somewhere for years it very often doesn't!.

This happens a lot - Ebay, car boot, auctions etc.

There was a thread on this, with some people actually defending the practice.

To my mind it is deception - pure and simple - and these people are beneath contempt!

I would name and shame them, in every way I could. Send a 'standard reply' (to every member advertising anything) along the lines of 'Just to warn you that I gave an item to xxxx and they put it on Ebay.'
  • I've been a freecycler for a couple of years, and not only have I received a few great and usefull things, I've also prevented my loft from bursting under the strain of theings that 'will come in handy one day'. Recently tho, I've given quite a lot, and because of shift patterns etc, am not always at home when taker wants to collect so I have a hiding place in the garden where I tell them just to help themselves. I was awakened one night by a 'taker' knocking on the door at 11pm!!! I didnt answer the door, but could see that they took the item then left in their car. They never posted a 'thanks' or even a private email to say sorry it was so late at night! On the flip side tho...I posted a wanted for something to wear to my dad's wedding, and a lady said she had the perfect dress for me. She offered to drop it off and put in my hiding place. When I got home, there was a lovely box waiting, inside was the dress, shoes, handbag, ear rings, necklace and perfume samples!! I had tears in my eyes and could not have thanked her enough for being so thoughtful and kind!
    skint but in luv :kisses2:

Their ad on Ebay even says
Passed on to me recently after a family member passed away.
What a cheek!!!
Still not heard back from moderator, and auction finishes tomorrow.
Hubby suggested I "spoil" the auction, but I'm not sure that's my style.

I like this bit as well:
am a busy stay at home mummy with an active 3 year old daughter and a 22 month old son. All the baby things i sell that have been worn by my babies and washed in fairy non bio and comfort pure. I try to be as honest as possible as this is an important hobby to me as i suffer from a disability and looking after my babies this is an escape to normality. Please read my feedback which i am very proud of. I love to answer any questions and am always happy to consider sensible buy it now offers.

I am not an ebay member - but I would certainly 'ask a question' if I were - like what is your definition of 'honest'.

I've had a look too, why don't you email them back on their address they got when asking for your item and say you've seen it on ebay and you're not happy.

Bloody cheek of it I say.

The dining set was really good quality, and I was very sad to see it go.
I just consoled myself that this poor disabled woman would have some quality furniture (albeit somewhat old fashioned!).

    She didn't even send a thank-you email.:naughty:
