Surely repeated payments to one bank are a lot less likely to be stopped than frequent payments to many different external accounts

I've banked with Santander for many years and seldom had a problem. Only major problem was when they blocked a payment, and notified me they'd blocked it, in the middle of the night.
Holiday company had set up future payment from my Santander credit card. Company notified me that payment would be taken on the arranged date, but unfortunately didn't tell me they would do this at midnight. Woke next morning to text from company saying booking had been cancelled as credit card payment had been rejected.
Found text from Santander at 12.15 am asking me to confirm payment and further text an hour later saying payment had been rejected as I had not confirmed. My phone is switched off overnight, so never got the texts.
Phoned Santander and holiday company to get things sorted out. Santander told me that overnight texts were computer generated and did not take notice of time of day.1 -
A bit off topic but just to clarify to some posters. Banks cannot block incoming payments, please don't spread misinformation like this as it can cause a lot of confusion and headaches for staff/customers alike.
Worked for years in high Street banks and one example a lady was receiving a payment from DWP that wasn't hers. She spoke to DWP who didn't recognise it and we as a bank can't stop inbound payments. We had to monthly send the money to an internal account waiting for someone to claim it. Possibly someone's benefits so they likely would claim it back from the bank.
The issue with any delays with payments is likely going to be the sender's bank with additional security checks and if not satisfied will delay or cancel payments. In the event that they are met and payments still not received, likely due to technical errors or issue with recipient bank details (though this is significantly reduced with COP).1 -

Is it just me, but I am finding Santander online banking frustrating. I can log on (mostly) but when I try to make a transaction I am just sent back to the log in screen, however if I use the back button my banking is still showing. When I try to log off the same thing happens, I am sent back to the log in screen but my account is still showing if I use the back button.
This does not happen every time but I am somewhat wary now of putting too much cash into the account. I have made a couple of payments in and a test payment back to my Nationwide account with no trouble. Might I add that I have numerous online banking accounts and have never had any problems with any of them. Maybe some of the warnings about Santander on Trustpilot should be heeded.1 -
Been with Santander for years, used the on-line service, can’t recollect ever having any significant issues3

Are you leaving a background tab open with a Santander online banking page? If open on multiple tabs, one could time out due to inactivity and cause the behaviour you describe.

I now use the Santander app whenever possible. Online only where the functionality is not available in the app (e.g. modifying an existing SO). It's not the slickest of apps but very reliable, and I haven't had any technical issues with them in absolute ages. I will definitely not check out Santander, or any other bank, on Trustpilot.0
