Examples of surprising prices

Luckily our tap water is good for drinking (W Yorks) so no need to buy bottled water or have a water filter. I think the bottled stuff is very over-priced but, each to their own. I do notice the difference though in other parts of the country so can understand why people buy them.
What worries me more is when the basic necessities (ie things like milk, eggs, cheese, flour, fresh F&V etc) are in short supply and becoming dearer by the day. Yes, you can manage on tinned/frozen/store cupboard but I suppose it depends on what you're used to eating and actually like. I do sometimes buy things like parmesan, courgettes, fresh orange juice etc but only if it's on at a good price and the budget allows - I consider them "nice to haves" and wouldn't be up in arms if they weren't available.Be kind to others and to yourself too.4 -
Its funny how tastes change, would now consider parmesan more of a essential than sugar.15

In terms of low prices: Potatoes, highly nutritious, versatile, tasty. Very cheap.
Many people need to learn to bulk out meals with potato. And seasonal veg - at the moment carrots, cabbage/brassicas all very cheap.
In terms of astonishing high prices anything by Heinz (come off it £1.20 -1.40 for beans or soup). Or those very small Pizza Express pizzas - £5. Maybe the common theme is branding, some people (often those who can least afford it) put great store by it. E.g. They buy Lurpak rather than own far cheaper own brand butter despite the fact Lurpak is c30% water and cheaper oil emulsified into it.6 -

It may be taste too - I was brought up on Lurpak not Kerrygold like my ex-husband & I prefer that taste.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

Mmmm Kerrygold. I bought a couple of blocks the other week in B+M, much prefer it aldi/lidl butter, but it was on offer then and I’m not paying full whack for it.I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.4
