Getting to grips with this all now and feeling really proud of my progress. Even got over my fear of the circular saw and cut all my own timber instead of waiting for OH to do it!

I finished levelling out all the carcasses today, and fixed them to the wall. I put the accessories in the right hand wardrobe - so glad I did this now. I thought maybe I was pre-empting it but I realised that so many of the holes I'd intended to screw into for security are made inaccessible by things like the drawer runners (which span over two or three holes, not just the one they're affixed to). So putting in all the accessories means I know exactly where I can screw.

I tied the righthand carcass to its neighbour using male/female bolts. And I covered all the screws up with caps.

I also cut the timbers for the left hand side. These ones are far more accurate as I used spacers. I remembered the stripwood I bought is 10mm which is also the depth I need the framing to be back from the edge. So a few bits of trim ripped up gave me a perfect spacer to press against.

All glued in on the sides now and left to cure. Tomorrow I will fit all the accessories in the left hand carcass so I can see where I have opportunity to add additional screws in.

Week progress report. I finished all the framing!

Leave it all to cure in and hopefully have some time on Sunday to start measuring and cutting the plasterboard :)

    Nice job.

Think I would have gone for the simpler L layout and missed out the stepped short side and deep corner.

    Nice job.

It would have definitely been easier! Unfortunately we don’t have any other storage space for clothing so we really need as much as possible, so this option was the most space effective, getting that deep corner one on the left for hanging lots of items and then still being able to hang a few more items despite the 35cm depth!
  • This is purely a dressing room, so it makes sense to fit in as much as possible - and it looks sooo much more bespoke as well. Which it is...
Really nice job - have you done anything like this before? If not, you must be amazed by how it's turning out?!

Haha not at all. Never even used the mini circular saw until a few days ago. Not done any sort of woodworking since school. I’m just good at googling to get the right answers (here, mainly) and then getting on with it. But I am a pretty creative person, my main hobby is dressmaking and tailoring and I’m a software engineer. They’re all things that involve problem solving and overcoming one step at a time.

Back on topic, I decided to start plasterboarding. I cut most of the timber in my conservatory as it was raining, and it generated a bit of dust on the floor but was otherwise fine. Not so much for plasterboard! One piece cut and I realised my mistake. So I’ll have to take the rest outside!
  • What are you cutting it with?!
You score it with a knife, fold it, and it should snap cleanly. Then run the knife up the other paper side.
Ah, yes, lots of plaster does tend to come off with the knife right enough... :-(

Finished the plasterboard over the weekend. First layer of plaster jointing is done. I was a bit too heavy handed I fear and failed to get it smooth with the knife, so that will mean a lot more sanding (and dust) once I let it dry, but it is what it is.

I think I didn't do too terrible a job filling in the rather large gaps between the plasterboard and the ceiling. Also the paper tape was ideal and the corners look great!

Now I just need to wait for it to dry. Said sandable in 2hrs but yesterday evening I attempted some sanding and it was still a bit damp so I applied a thin second coat this morning and am hoping to get the first layer sanded down tonight. Then reapply a thin layer to any areas that need it before coat number 2. Hopefully that's all I'll need.
