Since we ceased oven cooking ours is down from 6.3 Kwh/day (what we used to call "The Unit") to 2.6 units per day

Ive identified Bad Boy kettle as a big consumer at 3Kwh......his days are numbered, i watched the meter rotating disc almost fly off its bearings

Heating, hot water, shower all all gas, the gas meter hasnt moved in 3 days (old analogue meter)

averaging 3.2kWh a day electric over the last 30 days. that's a little lower than our 12 month average of 4.5 per day but i don't know if that's because of a change in use or because the kids are outdoors more this time of year. son did have a new computer game last month so was on his xbox for hours. meaning i think that is actually higher than our normal summer average.

two adults and two tweens. three bed house and me working from home full time.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Caveat you can't compare unless you have the same size family, with the exact same devices living in exactly the same house.

Details of our house in my signature. 6.5kwh a day average for the summer. We.both work from home full time and electric only so this also includes hot water heating. We could go as low as 5kWh a day but that wasn't as much fun and could also cut this down by 5kwh a week not using the tumble dryer but again no ironing and the costs is worth it especially when you take off the iron cost if we had to use it.

Overall down approx 100kWh a month in the summer based on last year so the little changes have worked.
  • In August I averaged 5.50 kWh/day of electricity and that has been the average daily figure used pretty much since June 1st.  Shower, HW and CH all gas combi boiler - only used 300 kWh in the last 3 months.  Both figures way better than what I was using a year ago albeit in a different house of similar size and EPC (Electricity average was circa 7.5 kWh/day a year ago and used double the gas (600kWh) over the summer months).

I wouldn't write off the kettle just yet unless you have another way of boiling water more efficiently or were using it a lot. If a 3.2kW kettle was on for a whole hour then yes it would consume 3.2kWh. However kettles are only on for about 3 mins at a time thus 3.2 / (60 / 3) = 0.16 kWh = @ £0.04336 if my maths is correct (please correct if not). The more times you boil it the more you will use and if you reduced the amount of water to boil to only what is needed then it will be less. That £ will increase along with the caps.
Obviously looking at the large wattage appliances and how long they are on for is a logical first step. However what I'm also looking for are more vampire devices and I have been quite lax with say my file / NAS server. I've just measured it consumes about 44 - 50W constantly. Plugging this number in then the kWh per day is 1.2 which doesn't sound a lot but it mounts up.

Rate Period         £ Per kWh   £ Per Annum
    Apr 22 - Sep 220.27118.70
    Oct 22 - Dec 220.50217.22
    Jan 23 - Mar 230.78341.52
    Apr 23 - Jun 230.97425.09

    Note :
-- These are calc on running it for a year on that rate rather than the amount it costs per period but its quite a scary amount.
-- I have estimated Jan and Apr based on native 52% and 23% increases as per forecast in the MSE relevant table. This is not necessarily accurate as that provided % is averaged across the standing charges and kWh rates for G and E and they don't all increase by that amount.

This equates to 2737.5 boils of a 3.2kW kettle for 3min per annum or 7.5 times per day. Now how many times to I boil a kettle a day .... probably more than I thought it was especially with working from home so I must cut down on the water I boil.

Disclaimer : Calcs made perfect sense to me when I wrote this but maybe wrong ;-) Please point this out if I'm wrong

I am also looking to change my file / NAS server solution to avoid stupid costs and wasting energy which I should have done ages ago.
  • We use about 340kwh middle of the night (for 2 electric cars) and 140kwh during the day/evening. That works out at about 4.5kwh per day.

working from home, I'm not sure I can get it much lower unless i start cutting down on my tea consumption
