So your old meter was imperial, measuring in hundreds of cubic feet, and the new one is metric, measuring cubic metres. The new one will show 2.83 X the readings of the old one, but the kWh you are billed for won't have changed - unless you are still being billed (incorrectly) for an imperial meter.melbury said:Thanks for all your replies.
The old meter looked like this:

Looks like we've found the smoking gun, as it were.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)4 -
I love a happy ending!Sea_Shell said:victor2 said:

That shouldn't be the case - the units now are smaller, so you're not using a different amount of gas it's just measuring differently. It's a bit like measuring in pints vs litres, the actual absolute volume of water in a glass doesn't change whichever unit you use to measure it.melbury said:I am just going on the fact that the number of units used per week has doubled, so the bill will double.
Gas is billed in kWh and one metric unit contains fewer of those than the imperial unit of your old meter.4 -
Sounds like the smoking gun is that I am a total prat who didn’t realise that there was a difference in the way the two meter readings are calculated. I stupidly assumed that gas units were all the same.Sea_Shell said:victor2 said:

I am suitably embarrassed and thank you all so much for your helpful replies and extreme patience.
To say I am relieved is a total an understatement. I am just so glad that I posted about it, as I would have carried on being stressed out.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:9 -
These things happen and many don't bother coming here to find out why👍melbury said:

It may be that your new meter is actually going to save you money given that you thought your usage was double and in actual fact your old meter units were nearly three times the new one.
That is why meters are changed.
To all those who say ` if ain't broke don't fix it' I would say that you don't know it's broke till it's fixed.4 -
I'm really glad that we have got to the bottom of it, and there's no need to be embarrassed!

All's well that ends well and if it results in a few less sleepless nights for you worrying about a massive bill, then it has been worth the discussion/investigation

And perhaps a lesson to some of those who posted replies just saying that the old meter probably was inaccurate and/or that you shouldn't rely on your historic records!!!1 -
The lessons to be learned are:-* Never refer to 'Units', always use cubic metres or (hundreds of) cubic feet.* Never compare consumption in ££, always use kWh.5

And there's nothing wrong with smart meters, in this case it's looks like it will work out well!Gerry1 said:The lessons to be learned are:-* Never refer to 'Units', always use cubic metres or (hundreds of) cubic feet.* Never compare consumption in ££, always use kWh.1
