Hello all
My 6 yr old is going to make some of these for her friends as Christmas presents.
We did a trial one last week using Tescos milk choclate from the baking section. It worked beautifully ad we had great fun decorating but it tasted too sickly and not overly nice like normal choccie.
What chocolate do you all use make the bars with?Member of Thrifty Gifty ~ Making money for Christmas 2010:£2 Savers club member no 40 ~ £54Amazon Vouchers BingoPort ~ £10Dooyoo Challenge Jan ~ £24.07 / £20.00 Yippee over target :j0 -
the all-recipes site also has a reasonably useful video on melting chocolate:

I'm off to give it a go now. I bought some Tescos cheapest choc (27p a 100gr bar) - we'll see how it turns out!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -
For those of you that remember the C4 programme 'Willie's Wonky Chocolate Factory' shown a while back and discussed on here, I have found his website if you want to order some of his dark chocolate for gifts this Christmas.

I made quite a few last year as gifts to go in a family coffee shop hamper - I used a silicon loaf tin, and used asda/tesco/sainsburys smart price chocolate ( not the cooking stuff) found it in the sweetie aisle. For the adults I used plain chocolate and put dried cranberries in the try first then poared the choc over the top. For the kids I done their initials in mini marshmallows and smarties etc. I also got my own 2 DS to make one for each other and I made a large circle ( as the loaf tin had another choc slab in it) for hubby, with white choc - done a heart with choc buttons. I made him a 'I'm dreaming of a White Christmas' hamper with all sorts of white chocolate goodies - very sickiening but he loved it!! WIll try and post a picture of them.

They look fab :T What size cello bags did you use and where did you get them from?
I used cooking choccie which is prob why it tasted gross :silenced: Will get some cheap normal choccie and try that :beer:Member of Thrifty Gifty ~ Making money for Christmas 2010:£2 Savers club member no 40 ~ £54Amazon Vouchers BingoPort ~ £10Dooyoo Challenge Jan ~ £24.07 / £20.00 Yippee over target :j0 -
Just popping back to report the chocolate experiment has gone really well - I used Tesco's cheap own brand choc - tastes absolutely fine, 27p per 100 gr bar; you'll probably need two bars for a loaf-tin sized bar. I made some small trial pieces by lining a bun tray with cling film, then putting a base layer of milk chocolate in. Half-set, I added almond flakes around one edge, drizzled a bit of melted white chocolate on the other half of each round then dragged a fork through to create a 'dragged' effect. Made six 'mega button-sized' sweets and took one 100 gr bar & two squares of white choc.
Feeling brave, I then made a choc slab using a plastic container I had lying around. Once it was half-set I dropped in some round yellow midget gems to make a simple sun shape and used another square of melted white choc and paintbrush to write in a friend's name (she's going through a tough time at the mo). They look pretty good together, so I've wrapped the slab in some cellophane from round the outside of some jaffa cakes (best I could do!) added a little ribbon, put the whole lot together in a small plastic lid that was on its way to the bin - and it looks great. I hope she enjoys it - and i'm happy to have spent a couple of hours clarting about! Thanks for the thread guys, and the inspiration.
Oh, oh! I've just had an idea - I used to make chocolate leaves by coating bay leaves with melted choc then peeling the leaf off. I bet that would make a GREAT decorative touch to a slab...

Hi I made the cellophene bags from rolls of cello I got from Ebay to do my original hampers a few years ago. I just put the chocolate slabs in the cello folded over the top , sellotaped the sides and put ribbon round top to finish it off.
Cant remember who I got them from on ebay but it worked out around a fiver for two designs and I have used it a lot. One is kind of opaque with stars and the other is clear with Santa and Christmas trees - chuffed to bits with it! :TNo Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:
