Just to clarify the point - "It won't send when on data".
Are you using "smtp-auth" or just straight smtp relay services.
The reason i ask is if it's unauthenticated the chances are your ISP is only allowing its own IP addresses to "relay" mail via them (and hence it works on Wifi).
In effect on "data" you're, most likely, a customer of another network provider (even if it's bundled up together).
It might be as simple as switching on authenticated services (assuming it's offered / available).

POP/IMAP should have no bearing on sending mail as they're mail collection protocols.

SPF, DKIM & DMARC records are all good shouts but if you're not running a business the "exposure" of not having them is somewhat smaller.

I think you're probably right. I remeber having issues with getting it to work at all when I moved to TalkTalk from Plusnet a year or so ago. And I've been wanting to sort it ever since. It's incredbly complicated and I seem to keep going round in circles.

I was hoping paying for it would make this all a 1000 times easier...

I'm not sure what I was using before on my computer as I've fiddled with it yesterday and today to try and get it to work with gmail. But my phone is where I've had issues with not sending.

The settings on my phone don't show "SMTP-auth" -- and just have an "authentication" tab that takes me to a list, none of which seems to be highlighted so I have no idea which one it is using. It says "MD5 Challenge-Response, HTTP MD5 Digest, NTLM, Password"

    Does that explain anything?

    Just had a quick look
On the basis of below - it's just password (and you need to use port 587 as opposed to 25)

Log in /Username  your email address
    Incoming mail server mail.talktalk.net
    Incoming Port 993
    Incoming TLS Yes
    Outgoing mail server smtp.talktalk.net
    Outgoing Port 587
    Outgoing STARTTLS Yes
    Outgoing Authentication Yes

On my phone (android) i have outgoing server, security type (which you set to tls) and then a slider to set requires authentication - which then asks for a password.

So, if I do that I should be able to send emails from my domain email on data?

It implies it allows you to relay mail via them if you're authenticated. On that basis you should be able to send mail as any domain via them (allowing for any dmarc/spf/dkim restrictions and the sending IP - i get the impression you don't have any so it should be fine).

So potentially I just need to change it to port 587 and problem solved?

I would turn on use SSL
Set the authentication to password and fill in the username and password bits.
set the port to 587 and you should be good to go.
