setting my domain email

Ok, thanks. What does the average user need though? I can’t imagine I’ll need much, I delete old emails regularly and I assume I can set it up to download messages to my computer and delete from the server if needed?0

Could I just set up a gmail account and forward to that? Or would it not work the way I needed?Does email hosting give something extra I need to make this work?0

Don't suppose you're an iPhone user are you? If you pay for iCloud storage for photos (starting at 79p a month) you get iCloud+ which supports custom email domains.
Alternatively, if you just want a service that will take inbound email and forward it to gmail for free, you can do that with Cloudflare Email: https://blog.cloudflare.com/introducing-email-routing/1 -

You can connect to your email on a PC or anything too - you're not tied into Apple's ecosystem there. Thunderbird on Windows will work just fine.1 -
Yes you can just use a gmail account. Create an account, forward the email to that from your provider and then set up the send as part of gmail to match your desired email address for the domain. You need to authenticate that you own the email address in Gmail but that is straight forward.
You can also set up multiple send as addresses if you wish. If the forwarding is set up for all email to the gmail account it means you can use a unique email for every site which allows you to understand which is getting spam, whether an account has been just been used by a spammer or actually compromised and then kill of that email and change it in the site it is used for.1 -
