Well, it seems Liz is going for a removal of speed limits on motorways, just as we’re all struggling with increasing fuel costs. The limit was introduced back in 1973 to reduce petrol consumption. Wildly extravagant usage such as powerboat racing was banned at the same time.
Germany of course famously still has no motorway speed limits. I once took a Honda 900 up to 150mph somewhere near Aachen. I think I slowed down to around 100 after about a mile. I don’t think it’s a good idea.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
Its odd shes talking about removing them at a time when lower speeds would help reduce fuel usage.qwert_yuiop said:Well, it seems Liz is going for a removal of speed limits on motorways, just as we’re all struggling with increasing fuel costs. Generally speaking and in normal times i'd be in favour of increasing the limit to say 80MPH, but i think removing it entirely would be a mistake. I also think the UKs motorways generally are too busy to facilitate cars doing much in excess of that. Definitely the case here in NI.
I also think theres an awful lot more for the incoming PM to worry about rather than speed limits on motorways.

Down south it’s 120 kph, which is more like 74mph. Try doing that speed on the way to Dublin anywhere south of drogheda on a week day. All right late at night.
Last time I drove in England was from London to Wolverhampton on a Friday. I don’t think I got above 55mph the whole way. Hoaching the entire distance, as is said in magherafelt.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
Need to get rid of the crazy R plate speed restriction too over here.
Causes traffic congestion at best and accidents at worst.0 -
There certainly is.

Petrol prices moving down again by the looks of it.
Back 154.9ppl at our local in Tandragee and over in Portadown at the Go station.
152.9ppl at the Fiveways roundabout filling station in Newry which surprised me greatly yesterday. Newry is usually quite pricey for fuel.0 -
As well they might, since Brent crude is now down to $92, which is 25% less than March. The problem now is how badly the pound is doing against the dollar. When the pound sinks, exports are expected to rise. That’s not happening the way it should - now why do you think that might be? With four prime ministers in six years, the U.K. is starting to look like a country with problems. Indeed yes, on all of that.qwert_yuiop said:

RE: the petrol prices, the value of the pound (or lack thereof) is now a contributing factor.
I do think though theres very much the "up like a rocket, down like a feather" ethos when it comes to fuel pricing.
