I have just researched washing machines and bought a new one. The big issue for me was noise, I wanted a quiet one and economical. In the end I went for a zanussi and bought from Coop Electrical. Ordered it last Thursday and it was delivered Saturday - really impressed.

This was the one I went for in the end and it is excellent.

Nobody has suggested them but avoid Beko like the plague, they suck big style, overcomplicated , flimsy fittings and crappy electronics.

OH is a domestic appliance engineer. He says

    1. Yes, Miele are great. BUT make sure you keep them insured. Servicing is an expensive nightmare. (I would add - make sure you buy from John Lewis as they do extended guarantee).

    2. Fairly cheap machine with 5 year part warranty - go for an Indesit.

    3. Avoid Candy like the plague.

    4, AEG make good machines.

    5. Bosch expensive machines are great, but avoid their cheaper lines as they are not made by B. Same rule as for Miele - keep them insured!

    6. Overall he thinks it's a choice between a cheap machine which will last less time and then be replaced, or an expensive one which will last longer. He says he prefers going for the cheaper one and replacing when necessary (and of course he keeps ours going for decades :o)

My washer is a Zanussi and it has been going strong for at least 12 years (possibly 13) with no problems at all.

We paid £520 for a Siemens which my OH thought excessive until he realised it came with a 10 year parts and labour guarantee which with a family gave great peace of mind.

    I've just replaced my washing machine of 10 years, which was aTricity bendix which had never let me down but did last an awful long time! anyway, whilst shopping around I found a really good website;

    http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/

On here, the best makes are listed and discussed, there's loads of information but the one message that stood out to me was spend as much as you have on the lowest model by the best manufacturer, rather thahn the highest model by the worst manufacturer.

amongst those listed as the best were Miele, Zanussi and John Lewis's own, but the best budget machine on the market is the Tricity Bendix AW120 £199 from John Lewis:

    http://www.johnlewis.com/Electrical+Appliances/Washers+and+Dryers/Washers+and+Dryers/+Washing+Machines/524/230447586/Product.aspx

this is the most basic machine by Tricity but the brand is made by Zanussi and as such is really reliable and for such a budget machine is fab. After having had one Tricity Bendix machine last me ten years I was happy to take a punt (or £199!) on this. All depends on your budget I suppose...

  • PS. DH also says that cold fill machines are best (and are the only ones made nowadays, anyway) as powder* is designed to heat up with the water to work optimally.

*You are using powder, aren't you? Liquid washing stuff is actively BAD for washing machines!!!

Only biological powder. See here "should I buy a cold fill machine"
