I've visited Shetland 4 times, it is absolutely stunning, one of my favourite places. Last time was August, we flew from East Anglia where it was 28 degrees and arrived at Sumburgh Airport when it was 11 degrees in the middle of the day. We had to put the heating on in the evening at the cottage we were staying in, as we found it very cold! We will be back though, Shetlanders are the nicest people. Would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors.
@Karmacat, you could probably fly to Sumburgh via Aberdeen or Edinburgh from Gatwick or LCY. I think there is also a round Britain cruise that stops in Orkney and Shetland.Mortgage Free November 2018

The Orkney islands are lovely, we wild camped on the beach at Rackwick bay, watching the seals bobbing up and down and the eagles flying over head, was very special.Karmacat said:I'm right down in the S of England, but I *really* fancy Shetland - also the Orkneys, the Scilly Isles, a few of the Channel Islands
The Scots islands would be like our trips to Norway and Iceland, with added Celticness and culture (speaking of which, Iceland has a huge Celtic genetic inheritance, mostly Scotland, some Irish - kidnapped women, basically!
I would love to travel to the Scandanavian countries myself, Norway looks stunning
I've done Isles of man and Isle of white myself but not done Guernsey or Jersey, will need to do them sometime... I have a huge list of places I need to visit lol4 -
