John Lewis Partnership Card

It is a complete farce - we have paid our card off promptly every month and have spent over 30k on the card over the last year - but application has been rejected. Bye bye John Lewis and Waitrose, we’ll be shopping elsewhere - do they even have a clue what NewDay are doing?0

Can't see that ever being a reason for rejection. The OP didn't mention their income, other credit commitments or any other potential issues, and with a spend like that, even when paid in full, would have made the card provider plenty of profit. They only mentioned that they had a well-managed account with regular spend - and mostly card providers like that.Chino said:
Maybe that was why your application was rejected - your level of expenditure relative to your annual income.Pjf2735 said:we have paid our card off promptly every month and have spent over 30k on the card over the last year - but application has been rejected.0 -
Have you applied for any other credit products in recent months? Made any big changes? Moved house? Have other cards carrying a balance and attracting interest? Have you also had a look at your credit files just to make sure everything is accurante and up-to-date? There can be a myriad of reasons why cards are declined, but it's interesting that you've mentioned you're coming from a regular spend, well-managed account - so there must be an underlying reason for their decision....Pjf2735 said:It is a complete farce - we have paid our card off promptly every month and have spent over 30k on the card over the last year - but application has been rejected. DVLA still rejecting this card with "Invalid card type for card number entered"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning. Albert Einstein0

Another applicant unexpectedly rejected here. I called to follow up and was told I could write to appeal their decision. I lodged a (verbal) complaint and said John Lewis would probably lose a lot of good customers from this. New Day sent a letter a fortnight later saying they had received the complaint, then another letter received today saying they were happy with their decision.
Not that big a deal for me, I think this will hurt John Lewis a bit.
The problem seems to be New Day, possibly pursuing a business model where customers who pay off in full every month are seen as unprofitable. But there are several posters on here in similar financial position who have been accepted for the new card as well, so it might be a glitch in the credit scoring system.
Either way, I'm not bothered enough to take it further. The JL vouchers were nice while they lasted, but not really a life changer.0 -
The OP didn't mention their income. I too spend over £30k a year with the bill cleared every month by direct debit with plenty of income to spare (no arrears or defaults and a history of 100% cleared balances each month). Yet my credit balance was reduced significantly. It has a limit which is 0.7% of my income which makes it pretty much useless.Chino said:

High credit limits are typical with high earners and not a sign of credit weakness.
And for reference, I received the first statement yesterday and payment date is the 10th. So, you get about 13 days between the statement and payment. This is much reduced from the norm.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Managed to get the new credit card by transferring over from the old one and retained the credit limit I had, So all well and good, started spending on the new card and have just recived my statement BUT the time between the statement and having to make payment has been reduced from c. 25 days to 15 days (reduces the interest free period if you pay off in full each month). I complained to Newday and they said if you transfer from the old card you get c 15 days but if you applied without doing the transfer route you get 25 days, basically meaning you are being pernalised for being loyal!. Needless to say I was not happy and have written to the chairperson of JLP and have been contacted by someone in the Customer Relations Department saying that the Chairperson has asked them to look into this, hopefully something will change.3

Had the same experience and a letter today confirming they were happy with their decision. They did offer to reconsider if I confirmed my monthly accommodation costs and provide copies of my last three months current account bank statements.Im_A_Mouse_In_Need said:Another applicant unexpectedly rejected here. Not sure I care enough to jump through their hoops just to continue to collect John Lewis points.0 -
Why is this 15 day rule a surprise? It was in the terms and conditions you agreed during the application process.Caversham_Chalky said:Managed to get the new credit card by transferring over from the old one and retained the credit limit I had, So all well and good, started spending on the new card and have just recived my statement BUT the time between the statement and having to make payment has been reduced from c. 25 days to 15 days (reduces the interest free period if you pay off in full each month).
