"excess" is the amount you pay for certain claims. For example if you made a claim for a camera of £100 and the excess was £40, you would have to pay the first £40 of the claim (i.e. you would get £60)."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0

I am currently in the process of organising some quotes for travel insurance for a trip to be taken next week.
My partner has high blood pressure which is controlled by daily medication. The quotes that i have looked at online refuse to go further if you say you have high blood pressure.
We have just spoken to a friend in a similar position who says his Doctor told him to tick the box that says he does NOT have high blood pressure as it is controlled by medication.
Is this right?0 -
Absolutely not. If anything happened to your partner in relation to his preexisting condition you could technically not be covered.
Any decent travel insurance will have a medical screening department. They will cover certain preexisting conditions for a supplement to the normal premium.

I have used Direct Travel annual worldwide policy for years.
A few years ago we needed to claim following a serious illness whilst travelling in Mali (West Africa). As you can imagine the chances of getting real receipts were very limited and any we did get were handwritten on any piece of paper to hand.
All we had was a letter from the tour leader stating that the illness had occured, attached the various bits of paper, included the costs where we could not get receipts and they paid up (including £1200 flights) without a word or comment.
You only find out how good your travel insurance company is once you have to claim...0 -
Thanks for the reply.
What a hassle we have had, as soon as we mention medication for BP (with no other complications, i may say) we have been turned away.
I spoke to a lady at Direct line who said she couldnt offer any medical insurance for him whatsoever?
So whats that all about?
Almost every other person we speak to seems to have high blood pressure and takes the same tablets as my partner so if the condition is so commonplace why are we being turned away without any further questions being asked?
I cant believe it, its quite puzzling as he we only found out about this condition by complete chance, he has no symptoms and never has had....and now we cant get travel insurance ???
Is there anyone thats been in a similar position that can point me in the right direction ie give me the name of a company who will give us a quote?
Thanks0 -
AXA have a medical screening process. Call them on 0845 458 0718.
Otherwise try Norwich union or Nat West, they are both normally quite liberal on cover.

I would recommend those below, they have provided us with excellent cover for 6 years now and claims have been easy.
We have had to declare a previous claim with no penalty, but no pre-existing medical conditions.
The do single trip and annual policies (our worldwide total cover is around £95 for a couple)

I have just taken out joint annual Worldwide travel Insurance with Martins reccommended INSUREANDGO (https://www.insureandgo.com) and I have High Blood Pressure controlled by medication like you. There was no problem in getting cover although I did have to phone their medical section to declare on thier dreaded 0870 number as I cannot find alternative but it was quick painless and helpful. All done online at a good rate no loading foir medical condition as controlled. Also wife is asthmatic and I am also awaiting operation on my arm. They will not cover any accident etc that is directly connected with my arm problem but covered in all other respects. I am mid 50's so even better.
Give them a try, you may be surprised.
When you fill in the on line form they will ask for a reference in medical condition and this is the one given to you by the helpline. All info is given on how to do it.
Good luck and enjoy your holiday.I am not always right,
But I am never wrong !!0 -
