Mine is currently showing the maximum on the trip of 250+ mpg. I took delivery at the end of September & 2300 miles later it still had just over half a tank of fuel remaining. I did fill it up last weekend as I wanted to refresh the fuel (28.3 litres)… suggesting the actual figure is around 370mpg.

very impressive. We did a few long trips in mine so nowhere near as good as this (and only a 40 miles EV range). I did know of someone who got a warning from the car that the petrol was past it's 'sell by date' and needed replacing as he'd only driven on electric for too long.

All the official data is that most PHEVS are barely if ever plugged in unfortunately as they are purchased for the tax benefit :(

    I think....

More important is how many owners actually charge than.

Further to my post above I have tried to combine the two charts.

Edit @17.52. Sadly that hasn’t worked out as well as I hoped - there is one glaring error. Some of you will no doubt have spotted the error but the result supports @Grumpy_chap’s point.

I should add that it was not all my own work but if I mention who helped me then, on past form, my post will be removed and I will get another suspension.

I'll just note that the emissions chart from the previous page is for "domestic transport", not just light road vehicles. Per the gov.uk source, "the domestic transport sector consists of emissions from road vehicles, domestic aviation and shipping (including military), fishing vessels, and railways".

So the influence of light EVs on that chart isn't going to be huge.

Good to see you back on here, Nick. Do you mind me asking which PHEV you bought? Range Rover perhaps? I have been considering the latest Golf PHEV which has a theoretical range of 80+ electric miles?

I think PHEv drivers fall into two categories: those who buy them to run them as EVs with the back up option of ICE to long trips and then there are those who just get them for tax reasons. Of course there will be some folk who save tax and run them on electric whenever they can.

I did look up how long fuel lasts & it's 3-6 months if the tank is vented to the atmosphere & 6-12 months in a pressurised container. My hybrid has a pressurised fuel tank so the manufacturer appears to have thought about preserving the fuel.

Yes, the full text that was provided with the chart in the gov.uk document is as follows:

“The domestic transport sector consists of emissions from road vehicles, domestic aviation and shipping (including military), fishing vessels, and railways. It does not include emissions from international aviation or shipping. In 2025, domestic transport accounted for 31% of all emissions, with carbon dioxide accounting for 98% of emissions for this sector. The main source of emissions from this sector is the use of petrol and diesel in road vehicles.*

Domestic transport sector emissions increased by 2% between 2024 and 2025, largely due to increased petrol and diesel use in road transport[footnote 6].

Between 1990 and 2025, domestic transport sector emissions have decreased by 9%. Primarily as a result of a continual growth in vehicle kilometres travelled on roads[footnote 7], domestic transport emissions grew to a peak in 2007, 9% higher than in 1990. Since then, up until the COVID-19 pandemic, emissions from this sector had fallen to around 1990 levels, driven mainly by improvements in new car fuel efficiency[footnote 8], and lower traffic growth following the 2008/2009 recession. Domestic transport sector emissions continue to remain below levels seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025, domestic transport sector emissions are estimated to be 8% lower than in 2019, the last pre-pandemic year.”

*UK domestic transport produces 112.9 MtCO₂e annually, with road transport accounting for 89% of these emissions. Within that sector, cars and taxis constitute 53%, heavy goods vehicles 17%, and light vans 16%, with rail and other modes making up the remainder.
