Petrol Forecourt now charging mandatory holding fees, who is responsible for the charge?

No it's not, the authorisation amount is never taken, the money never leaves your account (debit card)/added to your balance (credit card). It just temporarily displays as such.amexblue said:
At Sainsbury's it's not ringfenced. You have to wait 3 days for it to be refunded to your card.Sandtree said:
Its not refunded as the money is never taken, its simply ringfenced to prevent you going overdrawn/beyond your limit. Its down to your bank how quickly they drop the ringfencing.amexblue said:
And what If that's the only money you had on a debit card once the petrol is paid for? What do you live on until it's refunded?
In the same way people suggest using a credit card for the ring fencing of the excess it may be appropriate to consider similar advice for pay at pump... that or alternatively use a pay in shop pump instead.0 -
Because, at the point you put in your PIN, the retailer doesn't know if you have enough money in your account or "room" on your CC to pay for the fuel. If your credit card is absolutely maxed out to your limit, and they didn't check, you could take the fuel then have no way to pay for it - which would somewhat defeat the purpose of the exercise. The only way to check that you can pay is to submit an authorisation for a fixed amount (as they don't know how much you actually need - but until recently £100 was more than enough to fill up an average car) . If this is approved, it indicates that you have at least £100 credit available on your card so it lets you proceed. Then at the end, it submits the correct amount as an actual payment. The £100 is never taken, it's basically asking your CC provider "Can I charge this person £100?" - but the nature of card processing means that this displays as a pending transaction until it expires or is removed.VoxNonIncerta said:Thank you think I get it now, it's not happened to me before. I guess that explains why nearly everyone at the forecourt goes into the shop to pay, so a system that was designed to reducing queuing time at the pump no longer works because of this. Fingerbobs - I'm not sure it is the same you put in your PIN then charged after, I can't see how that can be exploited? And there what is the need for 'protection'.1 -
Canvey Island Sainsbury’s today has a sticker on the pump about £99 being held until account being settled.
first time I’ve seen a sticker on the Sainsbury’s pumps explaining that.Today I paid in the shop, it was quiet0 -
When using PAP I use a credit card, when I use the Tesco pump it shows as £1 pending for a day or two then the actual amount.
I believe, whilst it’s pending, whether it’s a low amount like £1 at Tesco or higher amount elsewhere, this money is NOT accessible (if a debit account for example). That doesn’t help the purchaser and as eluded to in previous posts can leave people in a situation where they have no money for a period of time.If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can't, you won't.

"When using PAP I use a credit card, when I use the Tesco pump it shows as £1 pending for a day or two then the actual amount."Same here using Tesco Credit Card, but there's never a £1 pending, always a display on the pump advising a £99 maximum. It appears in my transactions two days later.Last of the big spenders! That was 17 litre of go faster motion lotion in a Jerrycan for my Classic.

Maybe it is using a Tesco card that causes it not to reserve an amount. I used to use my Tesco debit card (for the 2 points per £) and never had a reserve. I now use my Tesco CC as the clubcard (for the 1 point per £) and another cashback card for the purchase and still never get a reserve.oldagetraveller1 said:"When using PAP I use a credit card, when I use the Tesco pump it shows as £1 pending for a day or two then the actual amount."Same here using Tesco Credit Card, but there's never a £1 pending, always a display on the pump advising a £99 maximum. Some banks don't show pending amounts, but they deduct it from the available credit. For instance, with Barclaycard, it'll show the pending amount. With Nationwide and First direct, it doesn't show pending amounts, but you can work them out by doingcredit limit minus current balance minus available credit. If that's not zero, then you have pending amounts.

Never see anything reflected in available balance, I am sure it is down to a Tesco card being used in the transaction.

Nationwide absolutely does show pending amounts, they sit at the top of the list in a current account or credit card account.zagfles said:molerat said:

Maybe it's new, ISTR last time I checked when there was a pending payment I could only tell because of the reduction in the available credit. This was in online banking, not the app.MattMattMattUK said:
