Amongst my "acquaintances" there is a reasonably even split between the " Oh God how are we going to cope this Winter" group and " it's only money" !!  despite the continuous Press coverage    :D
Users in this forum are more conscious about the implications of increasing cap this October. So I am not surprised that the number of people who decided to go onto a cap is higher than the average of the population.

Even when the fixed tariffs were almost always cheaper than SVT, there was a high percentage of users ignoring this and staying on SVT. Why would that change now.

Media coverage non stop about the cost of energy, I suspect this will have made some difference @pochase

Yep ; but there are still millions of people who have no idea about their energy consumption and how it relates to their bills - fixes ? what are they ?? - just look at some of the posts which appear on here !!

Definitely, but they will be happy in their world of £'s and pence never knowing of kWh. I suspect they will fix due to media in £'s and pence as well never knowing what they have signed up to.

As @brewerdave says, most of the people asking for advise in their initial post are only posting amounts. And that are the people who are interested enough to be concerned and are looking for advise.

I know that there is constant media coverage on energy cost, but you need to show interest in the news first so they can even reach you.

I don't want to know how many people are not even really aware that there was a cap rise in April, just look at the people coming off a cap now who are very surprised about the increase. Most asking about a fix are not aware there will be the next increase in October.

Of the 50% currently on a SVT, how many do you think made a conscious decision that this is the best for them going forward?

So we talk to our neighbours(lots don't) and 5 out of 7 neighbours have fixed and not because of this forum but because of media coverage which made them look at what was happening.

The two that didn't fix are tenants and that's probably where SVT is the go to for most especially if you don't know you will be at the same address for the full fix period/can't take the fix with you and it has large exit fees.

Did they actually check what the fixed rates were before taking them?
I'm hoping they aren't Outfox The Market customers!

🤣🤣🤣 Indeed, however you can become a very boring neighbour if all you talk about are energy costs, inflation and fuel prices.

Most seem to be with the mainstream suppliers so hopefully they haven't been ripped off.

I fixed 1st March for two years at April 1st rate. Eon next 2y v18. I thought the 2yr was the safest option although it incurred a higher standard charge than their one year offer.

There's no fixes worth going on for me, and I'm certainly not going to change provider, plus I don't feel like paying a early termination charge for something that will hopefully come down a bit within 12 months, maybe 10p gas,
Or it could go the other way and be £1/kWh next year for your electric and 25p/kWh gas...
