  • Sounds like you have a lot to think about in terms of the flat, but it's always a positive thing if you can clear some clutter, it's never ending though, I've currently got 3 stacks and 3 boxes of baby clothes to list on vinted now we've had our second (and last) and I don't want any of it going back in the loft!

Money targets also seem to be progressing nicely, great work overall!

The clutter really is an endless loop isn't it @FacelessNumber? I've made some headway and my nephew is coming over later to earn his pocket money and help me with more declutterring. Definitely a lot to think about flat wise. And once it's all cleared, it'll be easier to think long term. Irrespective of whether we ride it out a few more years, or we leave sooner rather than later, I definitely want to enjoy a clear home before we move on.

I've been resting today in between getting my car serviced. I dropped it off and came home to lie down and then collected the car and I'm about to have a nap 😬.

The £10 for my son's birthday pot and the £20 for the emergency fund was automatically transferred today. I'm excited as I'm now 1 week away from the £400 mark on the emergency fund, so the first week of June will put me in the 400s. Yay.

It really is @Cherryfudge. Although Currys called me and asked me about insurance cover (which I admittedly didn't even think of, or I would have tweaked the budget to pay for it with the gift card). They said that they can cover me for 3 years at £9 a month for 10 months, but I think if I'm going to do the protection cover, I'll just top up the gift card and get a discount and pop into Currys to add the cover as there is one within walking distance from my house. The guy said that I have a month from purchase to work it out, so I'll figure it out and top up the gift card when my universal credit comes on the weekend. But yeah, I don't think I really thought that whole bit through as I can't remember the last time I've brought a large appliance 🤦🏾‍♀️😬.

I really do not like those insurance policies.  If an item gets through its warranty period then it will usually last for years, if it doesn't then the warranty should cover it.  I am inclined to make comments like you don't have much faith in the products you are selling do you.  Well you have to take your fun where you can get it!

I think you're giving me credit due to @Chrystal, Keedie! But I'm excited for you getting the fridge!

I think @badmemory has a point: if I've understood it rightly, you'd be paying £90 a year for three years: £270. However, if you put that into a savings account, you'd be a good way to the cost of a new fridge, and if it packed in early, the warranty would cover it, at least in the earlier months.

Whatever you decide, it will make life easier once it arrives :)

Yes sorry @Chrystal, I should really read better!

I've done extended warranty for my son's PS5 as those things don't last, but I've not had extended warranties on appliances for years. When I first got my flat in 2007, I did extended warranties for everything and then nothing was needed, as I thought the washing machine broke down and replaced it, but it turned out to be a problem with the plumbing in the building. The fridge warranty ran out and I didn't have an extended one, and so I've just ended up with my dad's old one.

This Currys one is £90 one off fee and lasts for 3 years or £120 and lasts for 5 years. It's cheaper than replacing a fridge, but I'd not be happy if a fridge didn't make it past 3 or 5 years anyway. So I dunno....

I am pleased that you are getting a new fridge.
I don’t bother with the extended warranties as I feel they are a rip off. Not much can go wrong with a fridge.

I've not bothered with extended warranties since I moved into my first flat nearly 17 years ago, and everything was shiny and new. My dad's old fridge is about 8 or 9 years old, and it wasn't good to begin with, so I'm not surprised it's gone funny. But then I think of all those poor people in North London that were affected by that power surge the other week that blew up and fried all of their electrics because there was an issue in the electrical substation. But I know the power station was getting things repaired or replaced, so I guess general household insurance (which I still keep forgetting to sort out), is more important that extended warranty on the one item.

Anyways, I forgot that I paid £250 to Barclaycard, so that now puts my debt at £7,600. It's £7,850 overall debt in my name, as we're still paying off the Argos Card. But I'm very happy that the fridge didn't increase the debt balance as I was able to shuffle some money around from my tax bill savings and we got that backdated payrise. If I was to keep to minimum payments only, I'd be at £5,850 on Barclaycard by 31 December 2024.

I've got to stop being silly with my spending though, as I could have boosted my savings or shaved off some debt if I had more discipline. But at least with a fridge on the way, I can get on top of the food situation and how I've been haemorrhaging money through poor choices, poor mental health and general laziness.
