Oh I assumed gas because I used to have a Leisure range and it was gas, I just thought all rangemasters were gas!0

All sorts of things will make shifting a gas point easier or harder. For example, a suspended floor might make it easier, but if a new floor covering has been laid you'd want to avoid that route and go via the walls, especially if you can hide the pipe in the back of cupboards, or behind them. You might also want to invest in a cooker hood to vent cooking smells outside, so that might narrow down where the cooker can go.It will be worth the effort. Whoever located the cooker where it is, needs a slap with a wet fish. If the property has had significant recent work, make sure anything that requires one has received a Building Regulations sign-off.0

this will give a better idea of the situation.(according to the floor plan there are stairs to a basement somewhere in that alcove.
and this from the opening on the left of that one.

There is a minimum clearance above hobs - not sure what it is but it's certainly more than the right hand side of that (don't think the fact it's stairs above makes a difference).
Doubt it would void your insurance, though intrigued by your parents' apparent concern more for the insurance paying out than your house burning down!8 -
As pointed out by Slithery, that's an electric hob - a ceramic type? I guess it's still a risk, as something could be dropped/spilt on to the surface which could combust, but it's not as crazy as a gas hob would be! What's in that LH unit? Could this be sorted as simply as swapping them over? What a nutty place to put it, tho'! You NEED an extractor (unless you don't do any cooking...), so really need to find a wall that will take one, with ducting to the outside (or recirculating if you have no option). In theory, if you either swap the oven with the LH unit, or position the oven (you could easily go smaller width too, unless you really want this size) centrally, with a smaller unit either side, then you 'should' be ok. Perhaps ensure any at-risk surfaces are fireproofed.BUT - what a cute cottage! And a lovely kitchen. I don't blame you for being charmed :-)3

I wonder how many times the vendor has bashed their head on those stairs when cooking? Is it me, or does it appear that the cooker is sloping from front to back?Make £2025 in 2025

If I lived there the quaint cottage with a unique layout would have soon become a quaint bungalow with my cooking skills7

If it's electric then you may or may not need get an appropriate cable round to the other side. Ovens need their own supply and an isolator (I believe) and you may find you need to upgrade your fuse box (consumer unit). Depending on where your consumer unit is you may need to run a cable round the room but that's easier than a pipe and you may be able to take it via the ceiling. I'm not an electrician but this is my general understanding. Depending on where your consumer unit is and whether it needs upgrading you could be looking at £500-£750
All that said I think the bigger concern is whether that's a ghost on the left hand side of the picture...
