I'm on a variable rate with OVO. I've just looked at their fixed deals and ALL of them are MORE than the currernt price cap! Are they allowed to do that? I've just sent them my latest meter reading, I'm paying £108 a month, I'm £70 pounds in credit and they are telling me I need to pay £139 a month. I came of a fixed deal in August but they've calculated this £139 on my "deal" coming to an end in March next year.  How do they work this out as I don't have a "deal " with them and could choose to go to another supplier anytime, and my current plan says there is no fixed end date.
They are allowed to do that, and will do so when the general trend in prices is upward. The gamble for you is whether the fix will end up cheaper than the price cap, and you will make a saving over the term of the contract. Conversely if prices were generally expected to fall they might offer a cheaper deal but the risk then would be that the price cap would fall more so it would end up below the level of your fix, leaving you out of pocket.

Of-course no one knows in advance how prices will change .

Interesting to see that E.On Next now have a two year fix Next Fixed 24m v3 which offers a £50 bill credit to new and existing customers. There's a pretty big catch though - there are exit fees and they are £150 per fuel!

On 15th October you signed up for 12 month fix which was the same as current flexible rates.

Octopus subsequently launched a much more expensive 12 month fix which was reflected within MSE fixed rates table as one of the most expensive fixes.

Today Octopus launched a cheaper 12 month fix

    Oh did I lol

Whatever, I did the maths and it looked good to me at the time so I fixed with no regrets
  • I've just signed up to a 3-year fix with EDF (Eastern region) at 29.05 p/kWh 44.02 p/day electricity and 7.09 p/kWh 29.62 p/day gas. I reckon that's about 1% under the Jan 24 price cap.

  • Octopus tracker = currently 5pkwh for gas and 17pkwh for electricity .I can leave the gas on 24/7 for about £8pd and reduce   electricity consumption
