  • So I've been doing some calculations and trying to workout whether fixing makes sense for me - any help understanding would be much helpful

    Current rates:
    Gas 3.21 u/r and 14.67 std charge
    Elec 17.82 u/r and 34.98 std charge

    Offer from British gas
    Gas  10.22 u/r and 34.07 std charge
    Elec 34.98 u/r and 37.62 std charge

Usage was 180 gas units and 1705 electric ones.

    Thanks

Unwise to think in terms of 'units' for gas because the meter readings are volumes.  Think in kWh because that's how you are billed.
Your gas usage seems very low - was that annual usage?  If it's the volume figure it will correspond to about 5715kWh if it's an Imperial (ft3) meter or 2020kWh if it's metric (m3).  Both of those figures would be low for annual usage, the average is 12,000kWh.

Yep coming from a fixed deal you missed the hick in Oct 21 and Apr 22 that's why the increase feels so steep.

Personally, assuming you don't mind the uncertainty, I'd stay on the SVR. None of those offers look very tempting.

thanks for the reassurance, thats the route I'm currently heading in as the fixed 'offers' don't look very appealing at all...there's still a tiny piece of me that thinks surely they they will have to be put the breaks on soon as people just can't afford this craziness!!!

Just reading the post about the EDF 2 year fix and looks like I might have been offered it.

My deal ends the month and I can see on standard variable it's gone up £60/month and for another £32 I can go for the 2 year Total Long Term fix but with £300 exit fees.  Not sure if with the imminent October ride whether it's worth it.

Yet on an email from them it states I'll be paying £1059 for electricity and £564 for gas on the variable or for Fix Total Service May 24 it would be £1274 and £735 so almost £400/year more. Not sure if this is the same as the Fix Total Service May 24v3 as mentioned in the post?
  • My EDF Fixed Rate Tariif ends on 30 June. I've been paying an (averaged) £91pm for both G&E.
Just had an email from them offering:
    • Fix Total Service Long Term £215pm for 24 months (Exit fee £300)
    • Fix Total Long Term £255 pm for 24 month (Exit fee £200) or same cost incl boiler care/online only account
    • Standard variable £172 pm
    My usage (terraced house) E = 2,534kWh; G = 14,086kWh

I'm tempted to stay with EDF and just go for the Fixed Tariff of £215. The estimated costs on above usage are:
    £1,102.50 Electricity
    £1,470.69 Gas

Same offers as me (but I have a higher usage!) The SVR seems more tempting but the expected rise in October could add another 30% plus, when it is likely to become more expensive than the Total Long Term Fix.
