joedenise said:@Slinky - have you tried just taking leaves off the iceberg as I've found that using a knife for cutting it causes the brown edges which doesn't happen with just removing a few leaves for a meal. Also means the lettuce lasts longer!Yes I've tried that before but not for a while, will give it another go next week. We use a plastic knife which cuts down on the brown edges, but you still get them as it gets to about day 4 or 5. I also find that the outer leaf wilts so I'm always throwing that one away each day.I tried using Butterhead lettuce but found that was getting brown marks at the bottoms of the stalks and up the spines.Don't really even like lettuce that much, it's just there for some bulk on the plate really!Make £2024 in 2024

Yep I second that ^
Himself likes iceberg, I like little gems. I peel whole leaves off when making sandwiches or salads, never have a problem with brown edges.Doesn’t make them last any longer tho!Edit: Sorry my phone doesn’t like me to quote for some reason 🙄 I was agreeing with joedenise. One minute you're cool, next thing you've got a favourite ring on the hob.4 -
Following tips on here previously given, I now unwrap my lettuce, make sure it goes into the fridge dry and into the veg drawer on some kitchen towel.
Lasts ages and keeps really fresh.
Although I now buy from an independent greengrocers that has an impeccable cold chain and high quality produce, when I bought from SM before I'd also choose the smallest lettuce, best chance of it staying fresh until I'd used it up.8 -

Sigh ..... milk has gone up again in the Co-op, now £1.80 for 4 pts, £1.35 for 2 pts and 80p for 1 pt. I've heard of economies of scale, but why should anyone wanting just one pint (eg singletons) have to proportionately pay so much more?Be kind to others and to yourself too.4 -

But on the other hand, nobody to give you a funny look when you turn off the heating & wrap up in a blanket to watch TV, nobody to use the last of the milk, and the joy of a big bed to oneself! 😁2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

Do you remember Nancy Birtwhistle who won Bake Off a few years back? She does a lot on Instagram these days and one of her ideas was to see how long she could get veg to last by wrapping it in a damp cloth in the fridge. She calls it Carrot Saturday on her Instagram because she used to check on it every Saturday. She got stuff to last an amazingly long time doing this so I had a go as well. It does seem to work - I did it with a Romaine lettuce and the leaves were fine for 6 days, just a little bit brown at the very base which I trim off anyway
She’s quite fun to follow on InstagramIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!8 -
There was a discussion on Facebook over the past couple of days about price hikes
.Exactly 13 weeks ago I bought three tins of Asda's smart price chilli to stash away in my emergency stash. I was recommended them as they were 59p a tin and a nice taste and excellent as a quick lunch or dinner with a jacket spud or rice.
I usually make my own but at that price I thought Hmm well its cheap enough to stash away
Today the price is £1.32 per tin.
Now since January I have a large book that I have been listing what I have bought foodwise, and the price, to see how the cost of food was really going as I had a feeling things were going to get a bit tough.
This price increase is just one of many I have noted in the past few months, and it seems not to be going up over a month or so, but almost weekly now.
My daughter asked me to nip into my local tescos on Sunday to pick her up a packet of Hobnobs for her to take to work for the office biscuit box .There were a £1.00 10 days ago ,they are now £1.19.
Things are definitely getting harder than ever and many shoppers will be struggling to keep abreast of things. Anyone else noticed how quick inflation has almost become the 'norm' now ?
