I don't have a UK passport but a foreign one and my identity was verified in about 5 minutes...Brie said:
I wonder what would happen if I did try to apply. I do have a passport but it isn't a UK one. If I used that and was refused I might complain about discrimination of some sort due to my nationality - which shouldn't be an issue as I fit all the other criteria quoted previously.0 -
Only Chase UK and Tandem required photo ID, and one non-UK bank I have an account with.sebtomato said:
Not what their respective websites say. They all require photo IDs.Daliah said:
These banks only require a photo ID if they are not able to identify you electronically, or if they have reason to re-check the ID of existing customers.sebtomato said:
Having had a quick look now, the following banks requires an official ID to open an account: Barclays, Nationwide, HSBC, NatWest...Like others, I have opened numerous accounts with numerous banks and building societies online, and rarely ever needed my photo ID. The ones I can recall who needed it are Tandem and Chase.I don’t see it as an issue to be asked by a bank for a photo ID. As I mentioned before, I even need to show one when picking up a parcel e.g. at thr Post Office.
Like others, you have opened numerous accounts with numerous banks but don't tell us which ones didn't require a photo ID...
Not RCI, Marcus, Starling, Natwest, RBS, Ulster, Saffron, Nationwide, Al Rayan, Atom, numerous Building Societies and Credit Unions, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, SAGA, Tesco, Virgin Money. I might have forgotten a few that didn't - - -- but as I said before, if any of them had asked, I'd not have had an issue providing Government-issued photo ID.5 -
To add to Daliah's list.... Principality, Post Office, Leek BS, OakNorth, Ford Money, Paragon, Shawbrook and Melton didn't require photo ID when I opened accounts with them in the last few years. Whether this has changed for any of them recently though, I'm not sure.sebtomato said:Not what their respective websites say. They all require photo IDs.

I don't have an issue with providing photo ID to Chase if that's how they want to do it (and I was fortunate that my photos were accepted) but it's not normal practice in my experience, just as others have mentioned. At least not if you pass the basic online ID check that most other banks and building societies carry out with the other information you provide such as name, DOB, NI number, address etc2 -
No, they are trying to keep their customers safe.littlemoney said:I fail on two counts, no smartphone /android 8+ and no photo id. Chase only wants people with lots of money who can afford to travel and so need a passport and also afford up to date android technology. Are they targeting the account at the young and more affulent? It seem so to me.
They don't allow people to use their app on mobile operating systems which are no longer supported by the provider and are therefore no longer getting security updates and vulnerable. That is good practice and it does not cost much to have a phone which is in support (they don't have to be flagship, budget phones sold also can be in support).1 -
I have just called their support and have discovered that I am not being offered an account because I failed their credit checks. It has never happened to me before and they suggested I check my record for problems but I can't be bothered as I'll just wait for other institution's rates to catch up(finger crossed) and I'll apply to them. If they reject me then I might have a peek.

I can confirm this vintage 2017 entry level smartphone works with Chase (as I have an old one), available for less than £40: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304419027943littlemoney said:I fail on two counts, no smartphone /android 8+ and no photo id. She is among over 56 million people who hold a passport in the UK.I can assure you, a qualifying device and form of ID are not markers of youth or having lots of money.HTH1 -
Unless you are already aware what the underlying issue might be, now would be a good time to check your credit files and possibly CIFAS, too. There could have been fraudulent activity with your Id, or there could just be some false information about you.thor said:I have just called their support and have discovered that I am not being offered an account because I failed their credit checks. None of what you are saying is matching what they have on their website. You have recently open a new account with HSBC without a photo ID?? Really? Or did you have an existing account with them and open another account, like savings account?Daliah said:

So you just provide some information like name, DoB, NI number without any official ID, like a Passport or Driving licence, and they open an account, without confirming it's actually you? I find that hard to believe, given the financial regulations...refluxer said:

But that's the point, the majority do confirm that via an electronic check with one or more of the credit agencies - it's only if that check fails that the (more expensive and time-consuming) manual verification of physical documents comes into play, although some providers (such as Chase) have taken to always choosing that route, for whatever reason....sebtomato said:
